increased amount of spam and number of spam comments getting through as non-spam
-
In the last week I have had a huge increase in amount of spam. Nothing has changed in my blog as far as email links, types of search, etc. I’m getting up to 100 spam comments a day, and it’s normally about 10. That’s not too bad because at least Askimet is catching them. However, I am also getting lots of spam comments that are not being filtered and are showing up as notifications – sometimes several a day. I do not want to turn comments off or make people fill out a form, but something seems to have changed recently in the security. Any ideas?

Hi there!
I’m so sorry to hear that this spam is not getting caught in your filter. We definitely don’t want you receiving these unwanted notifications.
When you receive these notifications, are you marking them as spam? It’s important to do that, rather than delete them outright.
Also, you can include the spam comment in your blacklist, thereby “teaching” Akismet not to allow it to get past your filter:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklistIf you haven’t already, you may wish to add a rule that you must approve a new commenter’s note before publication. After you approve that visitor, they can leave comments that do not require your moderation. You can that here:
https://lifeandheartmatters.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.phpFinally, if you are receiving spam comments on older posts, I do recommend closing older posts from comments. Most folks choose a period between 2 and 4 weeks to close comments.
Please let me know if the suggestions are helpful to you. You can also visit Akismet directly to ask them any questions: https://akismet.com/contact/
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.
