Increasing blog traffic

I recently started a blog (my first) and have more than ample time to promote it aggressively. Unfortunately, I’m clueless about what to do.
I would like to hear from everybody and anybody who has direct personal experience with successful promotion techniques as well as any referrals to other forums where this same subject has been addressed.
My blog is addressed to mature adults interested in commentary on modern American issues of society and culture but as long as your efforts have been effective promoting any other topics (music, zoology, whatever as long as it isn’t salacious) I’m interested in knowing what has worked.
