Increasing commments on blogs

In another discussion thread there was mention of low comment counts on WordPress sites.

I regularly post links to my blog on forums related to my subject. Now on those forums I receive more feedback than I do on WP.

I’m wondering if the current system of having to enter an email address in order to post a comment puts people off making comments, as they’re worried about getting SPAM emails.

Would a CAPATCHA system that doesn’t require an email address attract more comments?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, it would not. There are both technical and social reasons for that, but rest assured, it would NOT.

The advent of Twitter and microblogging has resulted in our posts becoming available to a larger audience. Sadly the links just get bashed about through the internet and most “hits” do not result in comments. Also it appears that “likes” and “tweets” maybe leading to fewer backlinks. This is not unique to wordpress.blogs.

Did you know that approximately 80 to 90% of comment email received every day – day in and day out by our mail server is spam – unsolicited, bulk email?

Currently most Web sites and Web software have accessibility barriers that make it difficult or impossible for many people with disabilities to use the Web. At the TOP of that list of accessibility barriers is CAPTCHA. Read more here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/14/the-10-point-case-against-captcha-use/

In any event, we can’t use CAPTCHA here on WordPress.com.

BTW-you don’t have to require people to leave an email address when commenting if you don’t want to. Don’t have a clue what the consequences would be.
