indent codes allowing avoidance of visual editor

    Hello. I very much prefer the text editor over the visual editor. The problem is that I sometimes want to indent a quote. I don’t see how to do it (and a link to codes doesn’t pan out) in text editor, forcing me to switch to visual editor, which wouldn’t be so bad if, when I returned to text editor, I wasn’t confronted with a huge block of confusing (fused) text and code! I can’t manage the content after that. And I don’t like doing my entire post in visual.

    Any thoughts anyone? Thank you.

    Do you only have this problem when you want to insert quotations into your text? If so, you might try highlighting the quote, and then clicking the “b-quote” button in the tool bar on the text editor. It stands for “block-quote” and depending on your theme, it might have the desired effect.

    If you really just want to use a regular indent, here’s the code to insert manually so you don’t have to go to the visual editor:

    <p style="padding-left: 30px;">Insert quotation here</p>

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks! Usually, I ‘either’ use punctuation marks or I indent but I don’t do both. That code that you gave me is just what the doctor ordered. Does that exist in a list somewhere online, so I can bookmark it for handy reference?

    Does that exist in a list somewhere online, so I can bookmark it for handy reference?

    I did a little searching and all the tutorials I’ve found add extra levels of complication that I don’t think will be helpful.

    All I did to find the code was to create a text post on my blog, add the indent on the visual view, and then switch over to the text view to see the code.

    Maybe the best thing to do is to create a draft post titled “indent code reminder” that you never publish but can refer back to when/if you forget the details.

    I thought of trying the same method and would have tried it myself eventually. As for something I can bookmark, I’ll create a cloud doc (box) that I can bookmark. Thanks again.

    @arrby,
    Here is an article from a long-time (former?) forum volunteer about formatting text for a variety of different indents:

    You may also be interested in some of his other articles about formatting text, so take a look! ≥^!^≤

    Note: if you want to indent more than one paragraph (<p etc…), then the better tag to use is a div tag: <div etc…

    Thanks Tess, everything I found was style-sheet focused which wasn’t so helpful in this case.

    @arrby,
    Also, if you like the CSS formatting for the theme you are using, then all you need do in the text editor is like so:
    <blockquote>YOUR_QUOTE_HERE</blockquote>
    Some themes have CSS which adds weird giant images of quote marks, changes the font size, adds odd background colors, and other effects some / many folks do not appreciate. If you like the way your theme renders blockquotes, then you can over-ride with the formatting in my previous post above. But if you like what your them does, then just use the blockquote tag.

    Hi Liz!
    Yes, things can get complicated. Also switching from text to visual editor can be a bit confusing. Sometimes things change as the OP said, and sometimes just refreshing the text editor page will put the lines of code back into readable form. But not always. Never have figured out why.

    @arrby
    Here is a list of html tags. Not that some are forbidden on WordPress.com. Clicking on the tag name will link to articles about the attributes you can apply as well. This may be beyond what you are looking for, but it’s a fun bunch of puzzles to play with, if you are so inclined.
