Independent Publisher 2: Featured Images don't display properly

  • Unknown's avatar

I love the readability of the Independent Publisher 2 theme and really want to use it. The problem is that the featured images are not displaying as they should.

The theme recommends 1400 (or 1440) x 600. However, when I started uploading correctly sized images (starting with the all-important header image), I found that nothing like that size of image was actually being displayed. It cuts off a little bit from the sides but the height is only about 300 px.

The images display okay on the actual blog page, even though I haven’t resized them when I activated the IP2 theme. The problem is with the header image on all the individual pages and posts.

This blogger seems to have had the same issue, but it doesn’t appear to have been resolved. Any help much appreciated.

Someone else with the same problem

  • Hm, you are right about that. Do you have a link to the other report? I’m curious to see if we have any prior work on that.

Also, as a Business Plan holder, you have access to our live chat support, where you’ll get a much faster response and resolution. For that, just visit https://wordpress.com/help/contact

    Thanks for your reply.

Apologies, I thought I had linked to the other blogger’s post, but obviously not. The issue she describes doesn’t appear to have been resolved.

    Link (hopefully)

I manage the site on behalf of someone else, who is the person with the business plan. I will explore that route with him.

I have switched back to the original theme I was using which is Dara. I was doing further work with IP2 yesterday and running into more headaches. (i) In the editing area, it was saying that the optimum size for featured images is 1200 x 675 despite what we are told elsewhere (ii) I clicked Update on my laptop but the site was still showing old content on my mobile even when I refreshed. At that point, I cut my losses.

I may be making elementary errors. I am getting better with WP and can do WYSIWYG stuff, but as soon as the discussion turns to coding, CSS etc I am quickly out of my depth.

I am also only just realising that wordpress.com and wordpress.org are not the same thing. My own personal site is a hosted one but this one is wordpress.com. Could that be causing problems, or is that just relevant in terms of the support you get etc? I did (briefly) try to activate IP2 on my own site but gave up because of the image-size headaches.

  • I don’t believe hosted vs WordPress.com hosted is causing the issue.

I think this may be a feature of the custom header. As one staff noted:

Since Independent Publisher is designed for a large custom header, which is used as a background image, edges of the image may indeed get cropped and will further adapt to smaller screen sizes. Custom headers that work best in this type of theme are more flexible, decorative or abstract, so they can handle this sort of cropping.

If it’s important for you to have an image that isn’t cropped and is fully visible across devices of all sizes, you could consider using a theme that support the site logo feature.

The site logo feature is meant for images like yours, that include important text or can’t tolerate cropping. You can filter for themes that support it here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/site-logo/type/free/

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/header-image-not-displaying-correctly-independent-publisher-theme/

The above link provides links to themes that may work better for the type of header image you are using. Let me know if you have any questions about that.

But as staff-blorbo mentioned, our staff will be able to further assist you via live chat since you the account that owns the site has the Business Plan.

    Thanks,

Thank you for your replies. I took your points on board regarding what constitute suitable header images and featured images for the theme. I have actually tried it with my own personal site, placing the ‘inflexible’ images at the start of pages and posts rather than using them as featured images. Early days but it’s looking okay so far. And, as I said, I love the readability of the theme.

    Much appreciated.
