Individual photo “want” & comments option similar to FB photos

    Hello,

I am new to WordPress.com. I do have some HTML experience and maintained a company internal webpage many years ago.

I just came across this forum and hope it is the correct place for my question(s).

    Website Purpose:
I have a number of family members who do not have and do not want a Facebook acct nor an email acct but they all surf the internet. So, I am hoping to use WordPress.com to create a private user friendly site where I can create/assign about 10 users their own username and password log In (email address not required). The only purpose of this site is to upload and share estate photos grouped in folders/or galleries named “grandma’s clothes”, or “Kitchen Item”, etc. I will be the only person uploading these photos and administering the website. I want each photo to have a “want” button, similar to FB’s photo site. Multiple people may “want” one item so I need the ability to track how many people want an item. I also want users to share their memories of items in each individual photo by using a “comment” button similar to FB photo comment option. I would like to automatically apply “want”/comment function to every uploaded photo or every photo in a gallery so I don’t have to enable each individual photo with “want”/comment button. I think that thumbnails will be helpful but not sure due to my lack of knowledge. I may also utilize RSS feeds in future.

“Want” and “Comment” are the only options/functions available to users as far as making changes to the WP.com site.

I would like to have a place in my WP site that shows, when I or other users first login, a notice of everyone’s wants/comments since last logon (similar to the notices link that can be enabled and shows at top of FB).

I have downloaded WordPress.com 5.2 and am using wp.com as my host and have created a private site.

I have uploaded some photos and am familiarizing myself with Galleries.

I have found many step-by-step guides that I have been reading/using and just recently came across this forum which seems to be the perfect venue to get some help with my first WP.com hosted website.

My first question is related to a post I recently read stating that creating a “want” button and “comment” button on individual photos is not a functions available by any means (theme, plugin, manual creation) using WP.com. I would love to know now if this is true instead of finding this out much later after many hours of invested time. Question: Is this true?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You could create a Private site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

And then invite them to it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

Each post they create can include multiple images: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/

And those posts can have comments: https://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/

Those posts can also have a Like button, which cannot be changed to the word “want” but it’s pretty much what you’re looking for: https://en.support.wordpress.com/likes/

All of these features are available on free WordPress.com sites.

Thank you for your quick response and information.

I will be the only one creating posts with images. It looks like from your info that they (the users) will be able to “like” and comment on the images that I upload.

That is great. I will follow your links to learn the procedures.

    Thank You.

I just found this blurb at private link: “All viewers added to a private site must have a WordPress.com account — this ensures that only those people you’ve authorized are able to view it.”

3 of the users do not have email accounts. Nor do they have FB accounts. That is why I was trying to use WP.com to create a family webpage that they could log straight into without creating WP account that will mandate and email address.

I take it that to create a WP.com account that an email address is mandatory? If so, I won’t be able to use WP.com. I have 3 users who are tech challenged and do not have nor want an email account – that is why I wanted to created username/passwords in my WP site and send to them.

The goal being that they can enter my WP.com address (grandkids.photo.blog) in internet path and then use their log in username/password to enter our grandkids.photo.blog website. Is this possible without requiring them to enter an email account?

Yes, you need to have a working email address to create and maintain a WordPress.com account.

We use email to contact the user for account verification, security, recovery and upgrade related issues, so we must have one on file.

I would recommend creating a “throwaway” email that they can use just for their WordPress.com account. They can feel free to use their username to log into their account and only use that email, to click on verification links we send to them, or any important security issues that may arise.

    Thanks,
