Individual picture on top of an article

  Hello,

  I am confused on the pictures I can put on top of a new article. I have attached pictures for all my articles and I can see them only when I use the direct link like http://volkermuth.wordpress.com/2013/03/01/kirsten-bruhn/ but when I try to access this article through the Archive function of the blog http://volkermuth.wordpress.com/2013/03/ I can only see the article without the individual picture.
  Can you please help me to understand the issue of the article picture?

  If you set a (suitably sized) featured image to a post, this image will replace the regular header image when you view that single complete post. When you view a monthly archive, you don’t view any single complete post, you view all the posts that were published that month.
