Individually redirect posts after moving to wordpress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I have already moved all my posts to a new domain on wordpress.org. The new site has a completely different structure so the urls cannot be moved in one go. Is it possible to for me to move them individually one by one?
    Thank you,

    Rene

    Hi vanhaminator,

Our site redirect upgrade will only work properly (to the same post or page on the new site) if the permalinks match — as we don’t offer the option to set up individual redirects for specific areas of the site.

If the permalinks don’t match, visitors will be redirected to the root domain of the new site rather than specific posts and pages.

I’ve found some documentation explaining how to customise the permalink structure on sites using WordPress.org software, perhaps that will be useful :) If you have any questions about that, the WordPress.org support forums will be the best place to ask for advice:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums

    Best of luck!

Ok, thank you. So what about if I first switch the original site to one of the paid versions of wordpress.com? Do they have any redirection plugins?

  • @vanhaminator If you keep the site here and just add a plan and custom domain, and keep the URL structures the same, everything will be redirected automatically.

Yes, but (I guess you didn’t read my original question) that’s not what I want. I want to redirect all the posts individually, because I have changed the new site structure. So does any of your paid plans have a redirection plugin that allows me to do that?

  • This is what I’d read:

So what about if I first switch the original site to one of the paid versions of wordpress.com?

I didn’t gather that you were hoping to upgrade to a plan that supports plugins and then move to WordPress.org anyway. If you upgraded, got redirects working, then cancelled the plan, those redirects would stop working. And if you upgraded and then kept the plan, it really wouldn’t make sense to have a separate .org site.

One thing you could do, though, is work with your host to see if they can help you come up with a redirect match.

You would still need the redirect upgrade here, but we’d redirect to a URL there, then your host could handle any further redirection that’s needed.

The site has already been moved to WordPress.org, but I have completely changed the structure and therefore the urls. I asked if there is a way to redirect the posts individually and I was told there isn’t. So then I asked, what if I take a paid .com plan FIRST, with the obvious intention of then redirecting it to the new site on .org. I imagine I can do that for one year, after which the new address will be establishe and the redirect will not be necessary anymore. So the question still remains, do the paid plans have a plugin that allows me to redirect each post individually?
    Thank you,

    Rene

  • Hi Rene –

Yes, you can redirect a domain on WordPress.com to another provider. Have you seen this page already? https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

I am sorry, but this is getting frustrating. I am asking a specific question and I keep getting the same generic answer. Do your paid plans have a redirection plugin that allows me to redirect my posts and pages one at the time? I know I can redirect the entire site in one go, but that is not what I want because the site I am redirecting to has a different url structure.
    Thank you,

    Rene

  • Hi there,

The only plan that supports plugins at all is the Business Plan:

    http://wordpress.com/business

And there are no plugins that are made by us that provides the redirect feature you are desiring. There are some third party plugins that you could look at, but I am not personally familiar with them or their capability to redirect page and post URLs individually:

5 Best WordPress Redirect Plugins and How to install (2024)

I do agree with @gemmacevans that this question may be better addressed in the WordPress.org forums since that is where your site is currently and will reside:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums

    Thanks,

Ok, is there a link to the wordpress.com plugin directory or do I have to get a paid plan before I can see this?

No, the question may not better be addressed in the .org forums. It is about redirecting the site from .com to .org, and if I need to get a paid plan to be able to do that the way I want to that plan has to be a .com one, so it is the .com forum I need to ask my questions to.

    Thank you,

    Rene

    Hi Rene,

is there a link to the wordpress.com plugin directory

You can search and browse the plugins available from My Site > Tools > Plugins:

    https://wordpress.com/plugins/

However, it won’t be possible to install any without the Business plan. But at least that will give you a feel for what is available.

so it is the .com forum I need to ask my questions to

I do appreciate you are looking to set up a redirect on your WordPress.com site. The reason I sent a link to WordPress.org permalink documentation is because that could help you set up permalinks close to the ones used on WordPress.com, on the new site.

Doing so means the site redirect upgrade we offer would be more accurate when redirecting to the new site — there’s a note about this in the Getting Started section in the site redirect documentation.
