I can still manage to log in – – it’s that I cannot disable the 2-step verification. I can still log in to my account by clicking “send code by SMS” when prompted at the log-in screen. I receive a text message with a code, enter it, and I have access to my account/blog. Then I can only get as far as the settings for disabling the 2-step verification. When I click disable, it asks me to enter the current code. The directions on the website say that a code will be sent via SMS at this point, and it does not send me a code. The code I entered to get into my account does not work, and back up codes do not work.

Thanks for those details — I’m checking with our team to find out why the SMS code isn’t being sent when you try to disable two-step authentication.

In the meantime, can you try generating a new set of backup codes on your Security settings page and using one of those to disable it? Please let me know how that goes! :)

Hi! I did try generating a new set of back up codes but nothing happened when I clicked the button to generate them. (No codes were displayed). Thanks so much for checking into this… I want to disable it so that I can set it up again on my new phone and not have any issues signing in. I really appreciate your help!

The backup codes will pop up in a new window, so if your browser has a pop-up blocker it may be blocking that window. Chrome, for example, has a built-in pop-up blocker that you can disable with this guide: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95472?hl=en

Can you check those settings and see if the backup codes appear for you then?

It still did not give me a list- it just displayed the box for me to enter a back up code with no box or window opening to display the codes. I tried this on my computer on both Chrome and Internet explorer. After I tried it on both, now if I try to log into my account through Chrome or Internet Explorer on my computer, it asks for a verification code- and when I click to have it sent to my phone, the screen just kicks back to the sign in page– so now I cannot even log in to my account or to my blog at all on the computer! I tried it from my iPhone and luckily it sent me a text with a code so I could log in to respond to you! I am afraid I may completely loose access to log in and can’t respond to you trying to help me!! Thank you for your assistance with this.

I kept trying and was finally able to log back into my account on my computer. I am going to remain logged in, and hopefully will stay logged in until I hear from you. Thanks again for all of your help!

Well, I guess persistence pays off. I kept trying over and over again – and finally I reached the list of back up codes, and was able to disable the 2-step verification, and set it up again properly on my new iPhone! Don’t know what was causing all the issues, but it is now fixed, and I am able to access all of my account and verification codes! Thank you so much for your time, advice, and assistance!

Whew, thanks for letting me know! I was just preparing some additional instructions for you, but I’m glad you were able to get it to work. :) (We’re doing some additional checking on our end, too, to make sure there aren’t any glitches in the system.) Let me know if I can do anything more to help.

Thanks! I was getting so nervous I’d lose access completely! Since you are checking into it to see if there is a glitch – just so you know – I did try the procedure on different computers to see if there was just a problem on my home computer – and I had the same issues. Whatever it was, I’m glad I’m up and running again! If you find any glitch that would be helpful for me to know about in the future, please let me know. Thanks and have a great day!
