infinite scrolling in wp-reader

I’m wondering if there’s a way to disable infinite scroll in the wp-reader. It’s really annoying. Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You can disable infinite scrolling on your own site, and it looks as though you have already. So well done there :)

The reader at wordpress.com is meant to continue scrolling through posts, though. If you’d like to send specific feedback on that, and what you would rather see instead, go ahead and add it here and I’ll pass it along.

Well, what I would like the wp-reader to show is one (finite) page of a certain number of list items at a time, say 20 or 30, so that for older posts, a click for the next page would be required. Even better would be a choice of list lengths, let’s say between lists of 20, 30, 50 and 100 items.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I’d like to understand more so that I can pass along a thorough report: what would be the main benefit? Is it more for the sake of measuring / creating a stopping point, or to avoid bumping into posts you’ve already read? Or are you experiencing a performance issue with the infinite scroll? Thanks again; it helps us to know where you’re coming from.

Well, not an actual problem, it’s more a matter of personal taste. I prefer a fixed list, because the scroll bar stutters and tends to jump erratically when the lower quarter of the monitor is reached and the system is loading new items.

Ah, that would be something we could try to fix. Let us know what conditions create this issue (what browser? what operating system?) and if I can duplicate it I’ll file a report.

This is not a problem with my browser or my computer system, it’s what the infinite scrolling does, it’s intrinsic. The sroll bar button jumps when you reach the bottom, on wp, on other web sites, on different browsers on different machines. That’s why I’d prefer a fixed list. It’s easier to work with.

  • The sroll bar button jumps when you reach the bottom,

If I might weigh in, I’m going to guess you’re using a laptop and scroll down by physically dragging the scroll bar slider on the trackpad, rather than using a mouse wheel? And then when you near the bottom the entire screen suddenly jumps a few posts, because you’re still holding on to the scroll bar slider.

But unfortunately what you’re describing is how infinite scroll works, regardless of website, as you point out. Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, they all do this. The reason is that once the slider reaches the bottom and more posts load, the slider is no longer at the bottom and has to reposition to its correct position relative to the bottom. If you’re holding on to it with your mouse it can’t reposition and repositions the screen instead.

If this didn’t happen, there would be no way to scroll any further. @supernovia would know better than me, but I don’t think there’s any way to prevent this aside from disabling infinite scroll altogether.

I’ve experienced the same on my laptop and have taught myself to use the arrow keys, Page Down or Spacebar instead to scroll down. Then this becomes less of a problem.

  • @solminore okay, the reader is meant to continue scrolling as any other infinitely-scrolling site. While I can’t say whether or when such a feature would be implemented, I will let the developers know you would prefer an option for pagination. Thanks for the feedback!
