Initial domain setup

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I need a bit of advice before signing up for a plan.

    I’m wanting to upgrade my existing HTML website (www.ph-ad.co.uk) to WordPress. I have two current domain names hosted elsewhere (porterhaworth.com and ph-ad.co.uk). The .com points to the .co.uk. My current host doesn’t support WP. So, I think I have two options;

    1. Move the .com to WP. I think this means I can keep the associated email with my current host.

    2. Create a new domain on WP and point the .com to the new site. I think this means that when one hits the WP site the URL bar on the browser will show the domain that was set up in WP and I’m not sure I want that.

I would like the URL of my new website to be the .com and NOT the .co.uk as it is now, which means I think I have to go Option 1.

I’d be very grateful of any advice.

    Many thanks.

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

    Welcome!
    Welcome to WordPress.com

You wish to move your existing HTML site to WordPress.com.
And you wish to stick with your .com domain you can do that too.

    Start here, visit: https://www.wordpress.com/start

    1. Give a name to your site, add what your site is about and then select the goal of your site on the first page.

    2. To use your domain registered elsewhere, select the option which says “Already own a domain?”

If you wish to transfer the domain to WordPress.com you can do that or else select the option which says “Manage your domain and site separately- manually connect it (clickable link, click on it)”.

    3. Now enter the name of your domain you wish to use it for your website which is your .com domain

    4. Select the appropriate plan for you, there are three different plans like Personal, Premium, and Business plan, each plan comes with free domain credit which means, you can either map your existing domain for free or register a new domain, additional domain mapping will be charged $13/annually.

    5. Once you complete the above steps, then it’s time to change the Name Servers for your domain.
    >> login to your domain registrar and enter the following Nameservers:
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

    Example here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/using-your-bluehost-domain-on-wordpress-com/

or ask your domain name provider to update the above name servers.

For more information on domain mapping here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    6. You can also re-direct your ph-ad.co.uk domain directly to your porterhaworth.com from your domain name provider.

I think this means I can keep the associated email with my current host.

Also, take a look at “Email Forwarding” feature that may help you.
    Thanks!

    Best Wishes!
    -Vishal
