Inquiring into LMS for PhD Dissertation

I am a PhD student and am looking at doing a dissertation on a certain language/learning theory. Without getting into the weeds, I’m looking for a secure way to provide instructional material and various styles of questions/quizzes to my research participants. I’m also looking for an easy way for them to give me feedback about the research process.
However, this project is likely several years away and I am looking for a reasonably priced solution. I also value the open-source philosophy and community. Is this something that WordPress, Sensei LMS, and other Automattic products can do for a reasonable cost? Is there anything to point me in the right direction?

You likely could do most of this without needing to upgrade, aside from the quizzes. With using Sensei on a WordPress.com Business plan, you would be able to have a more robust learning setup.
The Business plan would also allow you to install other plugins that may help get things set up the way you choose. Yearly Business plans also come with live chat support, so you will have someone there to ask questions to if you run into trouble.
On top of WordPress.com taking care of backups and security for you and having very reliable and fast hosting, it’s a great place to start!

What would be the advantage to purchasing a WordPress Business Plan vs using a managed host through someone like Namecheap, Cloudways, or Chemicloud?
As you can guess, I’m a fish out of water in this space.

I understand that .com and .org are different. I’m just wondering, functionally speaking, is there a difference between WordPress.com Business and a managed WordPress with another host?
