Inquiry About Acquiring ‘Code is Poetry’ BEEP Theme for Self-Hosted WordPress

    Hi WordPress.com Community,

I’m building a self-hosted WordPress site (using my own hosting, not WordPress.com) and came across the ‘Code is Poetry’ BEEP theme by Automattic on WordPress.com. I love its unique design and think it’s perfect for my site, which focuses on blogging, design, and trading content.

When I tried to download the theme from WordPress.com, I got an authorization error saying I don’t have permission. I’d really like to use BEEP on my self-hosted site. Could anyone help clarify:

Is the BEEP theme available for purchase or download for self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) users?

If it’s exclusive to WordPress.com, are there licensing options to use it on my own hosting, or do I need a specific WordPress.com plan (like Business)?

What are the steps and costs to obtain the theme file for my site?

Any advice or experiences with using WordPress.com themes on self-hosted sites would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your help!

  • Hi @kevindvorak22,

At this time, Beep is exclusively offered on the WordPress.com Personal plan and isn’t available for download on self-hosted WordPress.org sites. I understand the presence of a “Download” button on that page you shared could be confusing, so I’ve asked our developers to remove it to prevent further confusion.

If you’d like to use Beep, you would need an active Personal plan on WordPress.com, which would allow you to activate the theme. Were you considering migrating your site to WordPress.com hosting at some stage? I’d be happy to walk you through our migration options if so.

Alternatively, we also offer a variety of free themes that you can download and install on a self-hosted WordPress.org site here: https://wordpress.org/themes/author/automattic/

Hello, I have a business account. Does this mean I’m not able to use the beep theme? Sorry, I’m a little bit confused about this.

  • Hello @aaronfaver. I apologize for the confusion. Yes, Beep is available on all our paid plans. Here’s the direct link: https://wordpress.com/theme/beep/. To activate it, please follow the steps as you would for any other theme listed as ‘included with your plan’ as shown in this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/choose-a-theme/#activate-a-theme. I’m happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

So, this is *only* available on sites which are hosted on WordPress, and not available for self-hosted sites even if we *have* a plan through wordpress.org for hosting (and we want to run this ourselves)? Have you considered marketing that as a separate plugin and integration for third-party-hosted WP sites? Because I’d *love* to have a copy of this theme and self-host a wordpress site with it.

  • Hi there! Personal and Premium WordPress.com plan themes cannot be downloaded for use on other sites. Only free themes can be downloaded.

We have more information about Theme options here: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/choose-a-theme/#theme-options
