Insert more tag not working on post preview?

    I have an insanely long post that I want to break up with the Insert More tag. I have inserted the tag and saved the work, but when I hit preview post, the preview shows up in its entirety – no tag. Anyone else have this problem?

    I don’t think it’s a problem. The effect of the more tag applies only when you see a series of posts in the main blog page. When you view a single post you see the complete post, of course, and the same should apply to the preview.

    Wait a minute… that’s not what it’s supposed to be, is it?

    As I understand it, this is like a “jump to” tag. The post is long – nearly 8,500 words long, with pictures and such.

    So instead of having this one huge post load entirely, it should load only the first two or three paragraphs.

    Then it should say: read more – with a link.

    It should have nothing to do with how many posts are already up.

    Or is tech unable to answer this?

    No, as I understand it when you hit Preview it’ll show you the whole thing. The Read More will only be visible in the Edit window or on the main page once the post has been published.

    You can settle the question by opening up the Preview page and then doing View Sourcecode and looking for your Read More tag. If it’s there, all is functioning as normal.

    Thanks for that, rain. The code is there, I would just like to see what it’s going to look like. Why have a post preview if you don’t always see what it’s going to look like before you post?

  • Unknown's avatar

    You do see exactly what it will look like. That particular post. You do NOT see what it looks like on the blog as a whole. It’s not a BLOG preview, it’s a POST preview, and when looking at any individual post you don’t see the More tag.

    @lettershometoyou:

    Now that this hopefully settled, note that for a very long post you could also use this every once in a while (breaks the post into a sequence of numbered pages):

    <!--nextpage-->

    @rain

    So if I understand you correctly, people landing on my blog via the URL for that particular post will see the entire post? And those landing on it via the blog URL will see that post on top, in its “shortened” form?

    @pana
    thanks! I’ll try that, too.

    Yes, via the blog URL (also via categories or archives) you see the excerpt, via the post URL the entire post. With the nextpage tag, however, in both cases you see the first page only.
