insert pdf fails when Media File option taken

    Have been using WordPress for a while now and suddenly I can’t insert pdf files when I take the link to media file option – however using the attachment page option works correctly. I am using WP 4.3 with 1024x theme, Firefox 40.0.2 and pdf files created by Word2013 on Win 7 Enterprise. Is there a setting I have missed or a plugin or something that I have missed. Why would a file insert as an attachment and not as a media file? Hopefully somebody else has had this problem and solved it.
