Insert URL doesnt work

• Unknown's avatar

I am using Suburbia theme and when I paste a link into the “Insert URL” box of editor, the actual URL is there, but it doesn’t let me add text to the link.

What’s gone wrong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I do not understand exactly what you mean. :(
Are you referring to using the new Beep Beep Boop editor?

Are you referring to creating links in posts and pages?

Anchor text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. Relevant anchor text matters because it tells search engines and visitors what the page is about before they land on it.

See here https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

For embedding links in post and pages this is the general link model:
Highlighted anchor text here

This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
Highlighted anchor text here

1. In the Visual editor type the relevant descriptive anchor text you want to link to first. Note that “click here” is not a good choice. ;)
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.

I insert URL from INSERT MEDIA > INSERT URL, and then write the hyperlink title manually, just the same as I insert pictures.

I never use the beep, beep, boop editor. I go to Dashboard and do it the old way.

It worked fine until Thursday evening for me, now I can only paste the link, and it won’t give me the option in the box below to write the hyperlink title.

Dashboard > Insert Media > Insert from URL > paste url into the box, then there is a title box underneath it where I write the hyperlink title.

I don’t insert links any other way, I don’t understand what you posted above.

Is this another change that WP have implemented without telling us?

• Unknown's avatar

I hope I understand correctly.

Insert Media>Insert URL is for media files, not text links. https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/adding-images-to-posts-or-pages/#insert-an-image-from-the-web

For text links in the Classic Post Editor, see timethief’s answer just above. The “Insert Link” button is in the toolbar just above the writing box. https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

First write the text to be linked, highlight it and then click on the “Insert Link” button to add the hyperlink.

If that wasn’t it, please let us know.

I am trying to post pingbacks from my own blog, that is a text link yes?

I tried doing the way timethief suggested, but I ended up with the url on the page, and not the hyperlinked title.

Chewing the fat of the Full English Breakfast

Why can’t I have this URL as “Read more about the Full English Breakfast”?

You need to put the text in FIRST, then highlight it and add the link to it. The “alt text” is just the text that pops up when you hover over the link.

I want the URL to appear on the blog as a title, not a URL. I always used to be able to do this the way I suggested earlier, but not any more.

Thanks for your help, but I am doing what you say, but it still doesn’t work.

Paste URL, highlight it, click on “add link”, then paste the URL again in the box that pops up, add the hyperlink title, click OK, and then it just shows the URL on the page, and not the hyperlink title.

I am clearly doing something wrong.

Don’t paste and highlight the URL in your post.

First you type the text/title you want linked, then highlight that and then click on the “Insert Link” button, where you will paste the URL in the link to line.

I am trying to post pingbacks from my own blog, that is a text link yes?

If you are trying to create a pingback to one of your own earlier posts on your site, you can do this by creating your text then using the “link to existing content” function in the Insert Link button when it opens. Find the post that you want to link to and click on it. That should create both the related post title and the URL in one go.

Look further down the page in this Support doc where it says “#4 Or, if you want to link to one of your existing posts or pages, use the search box to quickly find…”

I think I have got the hang of it now, thanks.
