How do I insert a copyright notice to protect my content? Thanks.

Hi there!
Many WordPress.com writers, photographers, and artists use the footer to add a copyright notice to their internal pages and blog posts.
Click Appearance → Widgets and add a Text widget to one of your sidebars. Add your copyright info there and save.
You’ll notice that the sidebar widgets on The Columnist theme will appear BELOW the content on the page, rather than in the side column.
The Columnist theme is designed to have widgets display in areas with single posts, so the widgets won’t be displayed on your blog’s home page, but they will appear on static pages and posts.

I had a WordPress blog a couple of years ago that was hosted by GoDaddy. I was able to edit/customize the headers and footers etc. by going into the editor and inserting code.
Do I need to pay for an upgrade to have that same ability for customization?

In order to have that level of customization, you’ll need to move back to a self-hosted blog, rather than a WordPress.com hosted site.
