Inserting media file as "Media File" is now same as "None"
-
I have created several blogs for churches (such as http://loneoakchurch.wordpress.com) to post their mp3 sermons each week and I have given them instructions for
how to enter a streaming player (by uploading the mp3 file then inserting as “None”) and then ALSO adding a link for those who prefer to download it instead (by inserting as “Media File” from the Media Library).Suddenly, those two options produce the same code (for the streaming player). This is true on all my different wordpress.com blogs. Doing the above two steps used to produce this:
[audio http://loneoakchurch.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/01-is-anything-to-hard-for-god1.mp3%5D
Right Click To Download MP3 (I have them change the text for the link to this)
NOW, it produces this:
[audio http://loneoakchurch.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/01-is-anything-to-hard-for-god1.mp3%5D

Hi there,
I just verified that when an audio file (MP3 or wav) is first uploaded to the Media Library, it is inserted as within the shortcode for an Audio Player, however you can remove the shortcode from around the link and successfully make it into a URL without any errors. The presumption is just that Audio file uploads will want to be played in the audio player.

The problem is that these are church secretaries uploading these sermons and so making HTML changes like that is difficult for them, though easy for you and I.
I’m just wondering why the sudden change in how the insert as “media file” now works just like inserting as “none”.

Hi there,
At WordPress.com we are continually updating our codebase to keep it as up-to-date and relevant as possible. We recently did a rather large series of updates which you’ll notice as you’re browsing around. You can read about all of the major changes right here:
Improved Menus, Autosave, Revision Tracking, and Post Locking, FTW!

The link you provided about your updates does not address what I am asking. It is still poor site design to have two different menu options that appear to offer different solutions (and used to), but now suddenly do the exact same thing.
I would like to still have one option to insert a media file as a streaming player and different option if I want it entered as a download link. I used to do that by choosing “None” for the former and choose “Media File” for the latter. I understand that I can fiddle with the HTML to MAKE this happen, but I still think you need to correct your options.

Hi there,
You had asked why the change. The reason is because we are always striving to keep our interface updated to satisfy as wide of an audience as possible. Changes such as how the audio code is inserted can be included with larger updates such as the one which I linked you to.
I understand that you’re frustrated with the change and I’ve included it as a potential place where we might want to revert back, however I cannot make any sort of guarantee.
