Inside comments

    Is there anyway to answer comments INSIDE the comment itself? I mean, someone writes a comment and you can answer him without opening a different comment. You write it into his comment with bold letters. I saw it on some blogs, and it’s a neat feature. Is it available in wordpress.com? I haven’t seen it here. but there are 700,000 blogs to sift through…

    yes i do that too. just edit the comment and insert yours there. bold your comment with the bold tag after you’re done.

    I have used this method too and so has drmike. I don’t know about him but I received only one negative response from a commenter on my blog.

    The advantage is that if you edit the post and add your own comment into the original comment box, then you do not have a Recent Comments sidebar widget filled with your own replies to comments. :)

    what negative response timethief? yes it’s nice not seeing your name on the recent comments cos everybody wants to see who else is commenting, not exactly you (but you should reply to comments, of course). and that you don’t give a false impression of the number of comments that is in a post, eg a post has 10 comments but 5 comes from you if you adopt the usual replying to comment method by leaving a comment.

    Alright, thanks for the info! by the way, I understand that when I reply to someone’s comment, he/she gets an email notification? so when I answer them inside the comment, they basically can’t know that unless they specifically check. Am I right? If so, that’s the only downside to this method.

    As far as I know, there’s no email notification for comment replies, partly because we don’t have a “reply directly to this comment” option. If the blog owner has set his/her options for email notification, they’re the only one who gets them.

    yes, this isn’t like livejournal or self-hosted blogs where you can have such a feature. people would check back in your blog to see if you replied their comments, usually.

    So basically, I can reply inside the comment but nobody will ever see it unless they open the comments thread again. Hmmm… that’s pretty goofy.

    It does give people a compelling reason to keep checking your blog comments, though. Totally ups your pageviews.

    well if the commenter has a wordpress.com account, they can check back on their comments through the ‘my comments’ feature in dashboard.

    @lior20
    I mentioned above that I had one commenter that complained about me using the same comment box to reply. The lack of knowledge that I had replied is exactly what he experienced. But as sulz points out the “my comments” feature is available to us wordpress.com bloggers just not to those with other blog hosts.

    the not knowing if blogger had replied bit can also apply to wordpressers who rely on ‘my comments’ feature because sometimes one might not look through every comments thread, or when one is skimming at avatars to indicate a new comment, but there is no avatar if the blogger replies inside one’s comment. but after all that, it is the blogger’s prerogative how they want to manage their comments.
