Insights is undercounting views
-
Hi, I’ve noticed over the past month that Insights doesn’t round up to the nearest hundred anymore once views are in the thousands, and now it’s flat-out undercounting. Currently (it’s May 2nd) my page views are at 100 for the month but Insights only shows four views. Why is this happening? I have Java enabled and the cache is cleared. Please advise. My blog is http://takinguproom.wordpress.com.

Hi there,
Can you tell me which stat exactly on the Insights page you’re referring to? It’s showing 189 total views for May for me right now. Looking at the heatmap grid at the top.

Hi–
Thanks for answering me, and sure–it’s the “Months and Years” tab on the All-time Views section of Insights, and currently it shows my monthly view count at 97 for May (as of 12:52 AM PDST on May 3rd). The Traffic tab, on the other hand, shows 197 views for May. I took screenshots but there’s no way to attach them. Anyway, it’s not a big deal, but I do know view counts affect how the WP algorithm promotes blogs, so I’m kind of curious as to why this is happening.

As mentioned above, I see 194 views (the 194/197 difference is because I’m in a different time zone from you, so when I view your stats it calculates it according to my time zone. So no need to be concerned about that).
Can you check if it makes any difference if you log in using incognito mode, or a different browser?
If you want to share a screen shot, upload it directly to your media library, and we’ll be able to see it there.

Ah, cool, good to know. The images are in there if you’re interested, but I took them last night so they’re out of date as far as real numbers go. The Insights count is still about 100 views behind the Traffic number right now, so I don’t get what the deal is here. Maybe in developer mode the numbers aren’t behind? It’s weird.

Got ya, yeah I’m pretty sure some of those calculations aren’t happening in real time and may take a bit to update. Do March and April seem about right to you?

Hi folks,
The Insights count is still about 100 views behind the Traffic number right now…
On my primary site, I’m seeing a large difference between views reported in Traffic vs. views reported at Insights > All-time views:
- May views, Traffic: 1192 (through May 2), 1675 (to 1:50 pm, May 3)
- May views, Insight: 997
If a delay is responsible for the difference, then the lag appears to be well over 14 hours.
My monthly totals for March and April are pretty close at Traffic and Insights, within ~300 + or -.
-
I wouldn’t be shocked for those numbers to be about a day behind, but I’ll double check and let you know what I find.
-
March is OK but April lagged until the end of the month. It’s nice to know it’s not just my blog that’s having this problem. :-)

I did some digging and we are suspecting something, so we’ve reported it here:

OK, the undercounting is still happening. I have 21 views so far for June and Insights shows zero. May Insights never quite caught up with Traffic, either.

We are still looking into this issue.

Thanks, that’s what I thought. I just wanted to follow up a little bit because it’s still happening on my end.
