Instagram embedding: how to fix this?
-
Hi.
I’m using the default WordPress Instagram embed feature, where you just paste in the URL and WordPress automagically renders the image on the page. When you click on the image, it takes you to the Instagram post, which is what I’m after. This works fine, however if an account is tagged on Instagram, the functionality changes. If you click on an image that has an @account tag in it, you’ll get a little popup showing you the account name from the tag, rather than opening the image directly.
See it here: http://restaurantsincalgary.ca/burgers/
The burger on the top right, from Flipp’n burgers, if you click on it, you’ll see what I mean. Rather than going to the post directly (the one on the top left, from Sidewalk Citizen does this just fine), it just shows me which accounts were tagged.
I’ve tried using the [instagram url=blahblah] shortcode with various settings like ‘hidecaption’ and such, no change. I have also tried installing like 10 different Instagram plugins but none of them seem to be able to replace the existing WordPress default for just pasting in a URL.
Is there a way I can change this? Have it so when I click on said picture, regardless if it has @accounts tagged in it, it’ll take me to the post directly?
Many thanks! :0)

Hi @restaurantsincalgary, that’s really interesting. I’m not sure whether that click code comes from our side or not, but I’ll be checking with our embeds team to see what they can find.
Had you noticed this problem before, or did it work before for you and just recently stop working?

Thanks for responding!
I only just noticed this yesterday. I realize you can click on the “27w” text, since the post was made on Instagram, and it’ll bring you to it, but I would prefer just straight up clicking the image directly.
The Instagram support page for embeds doesn’t have any help either – https://www.instagram.com/developer/embedding/
I guess one way I can fix it is to ditch the Instagram URL and just copy the direct link to the image and embed that manually.. but that’d be a lot of trouble.
Thanks!

Thanks @restaurantsincalgary, we’ve confirmed that’s the default behavior of the Instagram code… with or without WordPress. I tried pasting their embed code in an HTML file (without WordPress) and it works the same way.
You might try reaching out to Instagram to see if they’ll consider changing that behavior. I’ll do the same. :)

Bummer.
I doubt they’ll change it, even if there was some way of contacting them haha
Oh well, thank you for getting back to me.
Do you know if there’s a way I can disable the baked in WordPress handling of Instagram URLs? There’s a number of plugins available that claim to do the same thing, but I think WordPress’s handling overrides it.
Thanks again!

@restaurantsincalgary I tried tweeting at them. No response yet, but you might try the same thing.
And I believe this is coming through your Jetpack embeds. You could disable that module, but you’ll lose other embeds.

Tried deactivating/deleting Jetpack, no change.
Added another embed plugin for Instagram then wrapped that in a simple html link code, that seemed to work.
Thanks for the help!
