Instagram images

    Hi,
My blog posts publicise to FB and Twitter and always have done so. I have noticed this week that when they publish to my FB page, Write Note Reviews, the most recent Instagram image I have shared (on Instagram) comes up as the feature image (only on FB). This is despite having a feature image set.

It’s not really what I want to see – a book review with a plate of food as the image.

Can you please tell me how this can be rectified? It’s a new problem and has coincided with a different style in how the posts are appearing (the first lines of the review/post appear in the status, whereas it used to just be the title and link).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is the facebook page. The Tuesday Teaser post at the top has the correct image because I deleted the post and reposted with the correct image.

    Hi there,

Could you clarify on which post this happened so I can investigate closely?

At first I thought your issue with the Instagram image occurring was on this post:

    http://writenotereviews.com/2015/05/26/guest-post-godiva-the-peace-weaver/

That appears to be the most recent post on your Facebook page that used Publicize (instead of manually shared) and I see that the image on Facebook is different from the featured image of the post.

But you mentioned a plate of food, and I do not see that on your Facebook page nor on any of your sites posts.

It’s not unusual for Facebook to grab an image from an Instagram widget instead of from within the post, but it is unusual for that to happen when a featured image is set unless the featured image is very small, like under 200 pixels wide. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.

Please let me know which post specifically so I can work on it with my developers who handle Publicize.

It’s a new problem and has coincided with a different style in how the posts are appearing (the first lines of the review/post appear in the status, whereas it used to just be the title and link).

The different styles are to be expected. We released a change to Publicize on Thursday that changes a number of ways we handle formatting.

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, as you have noted, in the Lady Godiva Peace Weaver you will see an image of a flower that is not the featured image and not in any way connected with this blog post.

Likewise, one on May 25 called Northern Heat has an image of children’s books that again, is not the featured image and in any way connected with this blog post.

I noted a plate of food as an example only. It’s not uncommon for me to take pictures of food/flowers/wine etc on Instagram but they should not be grabbed by Facebook for these posts, especially since the featured images a) present and b) have been selected because they meet size requirements and have been used many, many times before.

The two posts I mention in this comment are the ones affected (as well as the one I deleted). Prior to that, and I’m guessing the change to Publicize, this was not an issue.

Thanks for clarifying the specific posts. It’s definitely the expected behavior that when you have a featured image set, that’s the one that gets sent to Facebook. So you did everything right and either Publicize or Facebook is doing something we don’t expect.

I know the new Publicize release had some changes regarding what images get chosen on Facebook shares, but setting a Featured Image is still meant to be the top priority.

I’ve reported those posts to our developers that work on Publicize so they can investigate as to the cause.

    My apologies for the trouble!

Thanks Alex. However, the issue is still occurring. I’ve just had to delete and manually add in a post on my page because an Instagram picture of bread was linked to the blog post, instead of the feature image.
