Install ADAMOS free theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    I would like to use the ADAMOS theme (free version), but can’t find it in the list of available themes and I don’t seem to have an “Install themes” button either. I have a WordPress.com Premium site.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Themes cannot be uploaded to WordPress.com, only self-hosted sites using WordPress.org. The difference between the two is described here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    I took a look at the Adamos theme, and it looks relatively similar to the Goran theme (also free) shown here:

    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/goran/

    Can you check out the demo and let me know if it’s close to what you’re looking for?

    Hi,

    Thanks for your help. I’ve installed the Goran theme and I think with a number of adjustments it might be okay… The main thing is that the big image at the top appears on every page, whereas in the ADAMOS theme it’s only on the homepage (which is much better for my site as I don’t want people to have to scroll down to see information).

    The other problem now though is that I looked at the link about the difference between .org and .com, and I see that I can’t install plugins at .com either. I need my site in three languages, and wanted to install the Simple Language Switcher. Is it not going to be possible to have a multi-language site at .com?

    Thanks again,
    Cat

    If you set a featured image for a new page, it will be used instead of the main image you have on the front page:

    Featured Images

    Would that work?

    Is it not going to be possible to have a multi-language site at .com?

    You’re right in that it isn’t possible to install plugins, but we do have some recommendations for setting up a multilingual blog here:

    Set Up a Multilingual Site

    Would any of those options work?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I set a featured image for a secondary page. I cropped it so that it would be wide and very short so as not to take up so much space on the page, but the program just amplified it and cut the sides off, so I ended up with a huge, fuzzy photo.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Actually, I have a whole bunch of formatting questions. I don’t know if I should post these separately so that each thread is one topic…? I can redo it if it’s a problem.

    1. Under Customizer – Site Title there is a space for a “Tagline.” What I typed in there does not appear on the page. My Title is my name and my Tagline is my profession–so I would like the latter to appear smaller.

    2. I would like my main menu to fit on one line; one item appears below. If I make the font smaller, it fits, but then the font size for all body text on the site is tiny.

    3. I would like to get rid of the page titles that appear in the middle of my photo on each page.

    4. I would like to get rid of the Reply form that appears at the bottom of each page.

    5. I would like to edit the links sidebar, specifically: change the font colours, get rid of the bullets and space the items out (like on the “Alternate Sidebar page” of the Goran demo).

    The suggested featured image size for pages is 1230 x 1230. Smaller images will be enlarged to fit that dimension. Can you try inputting an image that is 1230 px in height?

    Under Customizer – Site Title there is a space for a “Tagline.” What I typed in there does not appear on the page. My Title is my name and my Tagline is my profession–so I would like the latter to appear smaller.

    The tagline is not displayed on the Goran theme. We could add that text in using some CSS like this:

    h1.site-title a::after {
    content: "Translator & Interpreter";
    font-size: 20px;
    }

    However, please note that this text is not indexed in Google search engines so I would advise against it (the text is pretty important to your page!).

    I would like my main menu to fit on one line; one item appears below. If I make the font smaller, it fits, but then the font size for all body text on the site is tiny.

    Can you try placing this text under Appearance -> Customize -> CSS?

    .main-navigation {
    font-size: 14px;
    }

    I would like to get rid of the page titles that appear in the middle of my photo on each page.

    This should do the trick! Again, just drop this under Appearance -> Customize -> CSS:

    h1.page-title {
    display: none;
    }

    I would like to get rid of the Reply form that appears at the bottom of each page.

    You can do that by disabling comments on individual pages as described here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/#enabledisable-comments

    I would like to edit the links sidebar, specifically: change the font colours, get rid of the bullets and space the items out (like on the “Alternate Sidebar page” of the Goran demo).

    You should be able to change the color under Appearance -> Customize -> Color as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/14LHO

    You’ll want to adjust Accent 1 to change the accent color of the links.

    For the spacing and list type, can you give these two a try?

    .blogroll {
    list-style: none;
    }

    .blogroll li {
    padding: 10px 0;
    }

    1. The following 2 points are necessities for my site. If there is no way to do these 2 things with Goran, could you suggest another theme, also similar to ADAMOS?

    a) I need the site title to look like this (on 2 lines only, but with the first line larger):

    CAT KENDLER
    TRANSLATOR & INTERPRETER

    … And for everything to be indexed because as you say, that’s important.

    b) I set the featured image at 1230 px height, but same problem. I need a picture with different dimensions (very wide and very short). You know how there’s a darkened section at the very top of the photo where the title and menu are? I only want that section to appear, and for the rest of the photo to be cut off, with the page text content immediately below.

    2. I started work on the multilingual site with Option 3: two blogs (actually 3 blogs in my case). I bought catkendler.com (Premium option). It’s okay if the web addresses for the Spanish and French versions end with wordpress.com, but I need to be sure that all three sites will be identical (ie. same features, no ads on the 2 free sites). If this is not possible I think I’d better switch to WordPress.org.

    Hi!

    Let’s try to get the blog theme correct before we worry about the featured images. More than likely, that can be changed through CSS.

    Can you take a look at Sela?

    https://wordpress.com/themes/sela/

    It features the title and the tagline option like you’re looking for.

    Definitely! If you would like the second and third sites to also be ad-free, you would need to purchase the No Ads upgrade, which is part of the Premium bundle. What are the URLs of the two other sites you started for the other languages? I’m only see catkendler.wordpress.com on your account.

    Theme:
    I agree about choosing a theme before proceeding, each one seems to present its own formatting difficulties for me… I am trying to pick the path of least resistance since I’m very slow at this stuff :) I put up the Suits theme which I like a lot, but when I tried to add a menu (for the languages) I discovered that the theme supports only one menu. Do I have to pick a theme that supports two, the second for switching to Spanish and French sites? Or can those links just be put up in the top right corner without creating a menu?

    Multilingual site:
    I’m not sure I get the stuff about the subdomain… I can just create 2 more sites on my account with whatever names and then link them all up later?

    If I want to purchase the No Ads upgrade for the 2 other sites, does that mean I need to pay the $99 fee for each site? So $297 per year? That’s out of my range… What kind of ads show up and how often?

    If you want the links to your other language sites to be separate from your navigation menu, you do need two separate menus.

    You could potentially use a Custom Menu Widget instead of a theme with two menu areas:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/

    I’m not sure I get the stuff about the subdomain… I can just create 2 more sites on my account with whatever names and then link them all up later?

    Yep! Once you get those sites set up, just let me know and I can give some steps to setup the subdomains. :)

    What kind of ads show up and how often?

    Our ads are small and unobtrusive. We don’t allow autoplay ads or ads that take over the entire screen because we want the focus to still be on your site, not on our ads. We try hard to only run them in limited places.

    Let me know if you have any more questions!

    Hi Shawna, thanks for your help.

    1. I used the Custom Menu Widget for other language sites links and I think the placement on the sidebar is fine, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to change the font colour to make them stand out more?

    2. I have set up the other two sites in different languages. Creating subdomains is solely for the purpose of having the web address or are there other benefits?

    3. For the links on my sidebar, is it possible to a) put parts of the link titles in bold and italics and b) get rid of the hyphens and just push the whole word to the following line if it doesn’t fit? (It looks kind of awkward.)

    4. The tagline on the Suits theme is very small, can I make it bigger? When I change the font colour to white using the customizer, it jumps back to grey when I refresh the page (only the tagline, the title remains white). How do I fix this? Grey doesn’t show up clearly on top of most photos, and I’d like to have a photo there.

    5. On my 2 free sites there is only one default font. The font is fine, but I need my English site to be identical to the other two, and I can’t find that font in my options… What is it called? If it’s not there, can I add it?

    6. I would, however, like to make the font for the body text a bit larger (default size is quite small). Is that possible?

    7. I managed to translate the fields on the contact form I pasted onto my contact page, but it won’t let me translate the word “required” (it just disappears altogether) and the word “submit” doesn’t appear on the edits page so I couldn’t translate that either. Is there any way to do that?

    Thank you so much!

    1. I used the Custom Menu Widget for other language sites links and I think the placement on the sidebar is fine, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to change the font colour to make them stand out more?

    Sure. You can do this using some Custom CSS. Here’s some code to make this happen:

    #menu-language-bar li a{
    	color: red;
    }

    Here’s some info about the different types of color identifiers you can use:

    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/color_value

    2. I have set up the other two sites in different languages. Creating subdomains is solely for the purpose of having the web address or are there other benefits?

    Its for the web address, but it also makes it easier for your readers to identify that they’re still on your site.

    3. For the links on my sidebar, is it possible to a) put parts of the link titles in bold and italics and b) get rid of the hyphens and just push the whole word to the following line if it doesn’t fit? (It looks kind of awkward.)

    The links are one big chunk, so there’s no way to make only parts of the links bold or italic.

    As for the hyphens, these are added by the browser, but here’s some code that can force the browsers not to add them:

    .page-content {
    	-webkit-hyphens: none;
    	-moz-hyphens:    none;
    	-ms-hyphens:     none;
    	hyphens:         none;
    	word-wrap: normal;
    }

    .nav-links {
    	-webkit-hyphens: none;
    	-moz-hyphens:    none;
    	-ms-hyphens:     none;
    	hyphens:         none;
    	word-wrap: normal;
    }

    .comment-content {
    	-webkit-hyphens: none;
    	-moz-hyphens:    none;
    	-ms-hyphens:     none;
    	hyphens:         none;
    	word-wrap: normal;
    }

    .widget {
    	-webkit-hyphens: none;
    	-moz-hyphens:    none;
    	-ms-hyphens:     none;
    	hyphens:         none;
    	word-wrap: normal;
    }

    It looks like you maybe forgot to save your changes? I just made this change and it stuck.

    5. On my 2 free sites there is only one default font. The font is fine, but I need my English site to be identical to the other two, and I can’t find that font in my options… What is it called? If it’s not there, can I add it?

    If you want all of your sites to have the same font, you either need to stick with the default font on all of them, or you need to purchase the Premium plan for each of them.

    You can see the fonts you’re currently using in the Fonts panel in your Customizer:

    https://catkendler.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php

    6. I would, however, like to make the font for the body text a bit larger (default size is quite small). Is that possible?

    Sure. You can do that using this code:

    .entry-content {
    	font-size: 1.2em;
    }

    7. I managed to translate the fields on the contact form I pasted onto my contact page, but it won’t let me translate the word “required” (it just disappears altogether) and the word “submit” doesn’t appear on the edits page so I couldn’t translate that either. Is there any way to do that?

    Make sure your site is set to the correct language, then the theme translations for those strings should kick in. You can find the language setting in Settings > General:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/general/catkendleres.wordpress.com

    Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • Unknown's avatar

    This is so helpful, thank you so much.

    I only realized part way through doing these changes that there is no CSS on the free sites. I assume this means that all these minor changes I want to make to font size and colour, hyphens, etc. is not possible on the free sites.

    If that is the case, I need some advice. This website is for long term use, so I figure I may as well make it perfect from the start, and I also need to think about doing it as economically as possible since I’ll be paying every year for a long time. $99 x 3 per year is a lot more than a friend who does hosting quoted me for a site at WordPress.org ($189), where I could install a language switcher plugin and have only one site to pay for.

    Are there other fees at WordPress.org I should know about before I go assuming it would be cheaper there?

    Is it even possible for a dummy like me to set up a site there?

    I paid for the Premium upgrade about three weeks ago. Could I get a refund?

    I bought the web address I would like to continue to use, and I understand that once a site is deleted the name is gone. Does this apply if I just move my site to WordPress.org?

    Thanks again.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Are there other fees at WordPress.org I should know about before I go assuming it would be cheaper there?

    It likely would be cheaper to have a self hosted site for this. You need to factor in hosting for your site, which could include looking into the bandwidth you’re allotted if you’re expecting many visitors to the site. And some plugins will have a cost.

    Here’s some more information about the differences between WordPress.com and a self hosted WordPress site that you should know about before making your decision:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Overall, WordPress.com doesn’t support multilingual sites natively. So having a site where you can use a plugin that makes your language switching more intuitive for your users may be beneficial.

    Is it even possible for a dummy like me to set up a site there?

    Totally! The WordPress community has vast forums with people willing to help you out. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the initial set up of everything, you could hire someone to help you out with that. There’s a jobs page specifically for this type of thing here:

    http://jobs.wordpress.net/

    I paid for the Premium upgrade about three weeks ago. Could I get a refund?

    Yep! I’m happy to issue a refund. :)

    I bought the web address I would like to continue to use, and I understand that once a site is deleted the name is gone. Does this apply if I just move my site to WordPress.org?

    That deletion policy only applies to WordPress.com names like catkendler.wordpress.com. Your domain catkendler.com is yours to keep as long as you keep renewing it.

    Since you just registered it, you can’t transfer it to a new registrar yet. But you can update the DNS settings to point to your new web host. I’m happy to help you set that up, and we also have a guide here:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

    Once your domain has been registered for 60 days, you can transfer it to a new registrar. You totally don’t have to do that, but many users like to keep all of their website payments in the same place.

    Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    This all sounds reassuring, thanks for the info. I’ve decided to switch over to WordPress.org and have found a host. I’m wondering what order in which to do things. If I ask for my upgrade to be refunded to me, my site goes back to catkendler.wordpress.com… and then I update the DNS settings? Or vise versa? I would like to keep all my website payments with my new host, so I will transfer the domain as soon as possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

    There’s not necessarily a “right” order to do everything in, but here’s what I would do:

    1. Get WordPress installed on the new host. Install the theme you want to use.
    2. Export your content from your WordPress.com site:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

    3. Import it to your self hosted WordPress:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

    4. Do all the customizations you want and transfer any last bits and pieces, like widget placement.
    5. Once your new site looks like what you want, change your DNS settings and update your webhost to get your domain working.

    It looks like you’re currently using custom colors, fonts, and CSS, so I would say keep the Premium plan active until you’ve transferred those pieces to your new design.

    Then, once your domain has been registered for 60 days, you can follow these steps to transfer it away:

    Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi! Thanks very much for all this.

    The new host is trying to re-point the domain from wordpress.com to their own server, but they are missing the following information which I have no idea about: they say they need the login+password for the account that was set up in order to purchase and register the domain itself. This info is separate from the WordPress login info.

    What should I tell them?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I think they’re a little confused with our new system. In order to update your DNS settings, you just need your WordPress.com account:

    Manage Your DNS Records

    You’ll make those changes here:

    https://catkendler.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

    Let me know if I can help further!

    Hi Shawna,

    My site is all set up at WordPress.org and domain has been transferred. I’m very happy with it and I can’t thank you enough for your help.

    Can you please tell me how to proceed with asking for the refund for the Premium upgrade I got when I was trying to set up the site at WordPress.com?
