Install Divi Elegant Theme

Why can’t I install a theme I purchased that is a wordpress theme.

I purchased the Divi Elegant Theme from Elegant. I uploaded it to my hard drive.

Now I want to install it… Why can’t I find install theme in my Admin-Theme?

Also, before I am going to change the site to my real website… It is on Go Daddy; so I have to map the domain…. Where do I buy that for 13 USD/year?

Please inform on both. I am eager to get started. Thanks. Catherine

  • Hi there. The theme you bought is for WordPress.org. Your blog is on WordPress.com, which is completely separate and different (http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/). On WordPress.com we cannot install themes which were bought elsewhere (http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/). You can only use themes listed in the theme directory, here: https://wordpress.com/themes/

I suggest you contact the site where you bought that theme and ask them if you can get a refund as you won’t be able to use it here.

To map your WordPress.com site to your GoDaddy domain, go to the Store option on the My Sites page and select the domain mapping upgrade. Full instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Hi Kokkieh. Thanks for your reply. As I like the Divi theme and the way they have it on their website…and they have a full tutorial on how to install it into WordPress… Can I just create another blog at WordPress.org with this theme? And why wouldn’t I just do that?

    Thanks for your help.

  • You can do that. To have a WordPress.org blog you’ll have to set up a hosting account to use with your custom domain, so there will be some ongoing cost involved, and install the WordPress.org software to that domain before you can install your theme. If you have any content on your WordPress.com site you’d like to move to your self-hosted site, see the instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

Keep in mind the differences between the platforms. You will be responsible for the technical side of your site like security, backups and software updates, stuff that’s taken care of for us at WordPress.com. If your self-hosted site breaks or get hacked, you also have to fix it yourself, so at least try to get a hosting plan that includes tech support.

The WordPress.org support pages list a number of options you can consider in terms of hosting. For help and advice regarding running a self-hosted site you’ll need to post in their support forum, as we can’t help you with that on this forum.

See these links for WordPress.org hosting and support: https://wordpress.org/hosting/

This is very helpful. Thanks. What do you think about Go Daddys new Manage to WordPress support? Does that work for people? Have you found the tech support very helpful directly from WordPress? Or are you the tech support… because if so, you are very helpful, answer my own question….

  • I’m not tech support, no. I’m just a volunteer on this forum for WordPress.com, and here we do get excellent tech support from staff.

WordPress.org is completely separate, and aside from the information I gave you above, I’m afraid I can’t help you anymore with that platform. I do know GoDaddy has a bit of a reputation for poor customer service (just Google “GoDaddy reviews” and you’ll see), but the best place to go for feedback on hosting providers is the WordPress.org forums.
