Install Jetpack causing Internal Sever Error

  • Unknown's avatar

When Jetpack is installed and authenticated with WordPress.com I get the following error when I try to load any page on my blog. Strangely the homepage loads fine.

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Apache Server at gordonkelly.com Port 80

Only by disabling Jetpack (which I have currently) do the pages load again.

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re encountering this error. Are you connecting to your site via HTTP or HTTPS? Additionally, would you mind letting me know your host server company?

I also see that you’re using the most current version of WordPress.org. Would you be able to try completely de-installing the plugin and re-installing it? I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

Hi evarlese, thank you for the reply.

I am logging in simply using http. My host is GoDaddy (also the registrar of my domain) and I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Jetpack a few times. I’ll renable it now so you can see what happens, but I will have to disable it by the morning.

  • Unknown's avatar

Update: I notice only when I authorise Jetpack with WordPress does it cause the 500 error on my blog. When the plugin is activated, but not authorised the site continues to work fine.

  • Unknown's avatar

Would you be able to provide me with a list of the other plugins that you’re using on your site? It is possible that one of them causing this error when configured along with Jetpack.

Sure thing – there are quite a lot (!), but here is a cut and paste of all my plug-ins and their version numbers.

This is fantastic – thank you so much for your thoroughness!

To completely rule out a plugin conflict, can you try de-activating RSSupplement while Jetpack is active?

Additionally, I see that you spoke with Tim over at WordPress.org:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/jetpack-causing-internal-server-error

I would suggest following his advice as he is one of our fantastic Jetpack experts! Please let us know if GoDaddy is able to provide any additional help or if there seems to be a problem with that particular plugin.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks evarlese, de-activating RSSupplement did not fix it I’m afraid. It seems the only option left is to speak to GoDaddy, but it would appear odd for such a large host to have problems with a fundamental WordPress plugin.

I do have custom urls, could that be a problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

Custom URLs shouldn’t cause this problem. And, surprisingly, we have had a conflict with GoDaddy and Jetpack in the past, though we were able to fix the main bug.

Thank you for your help with this issue thus far! When you get a chance to speak with GoDaady, please do let us know if they are able to help.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi evarlese, I’ve gotten to the bottom of it! GoDaddy confirmed it wasn’t to do with them so a lengthy process began of deactivating and reactivating every single plug in I have and I managed to find the ‘LinkedIn Button for WordPress’ to be the culprit. http://frankprendergast.ie/resources/linkedin-button-for-wordpress/

I disabled that and everything worked, I also contacted the coder to inform them about it. Do you recommend a decided LinkedIn sharing button replacement?

Thank you so much for you help.

  • Unknown's avatar

Awesome detective work! I’m glad to hear that you have everything up and running now :)

It is possible that we will be adding LinkedIn sharing to Jetpack in the future, so you may want to keep an eye out for any updates regarding that. Otherwise, I see that there is a LinkedIn InShare plugin available that you may want to check out on WordPress.org.

Again, thanks for your dedicated work in tracking down the issue!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks. LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter sharing buttons (the interactive kind where you can see the numbers you have shared) would be great.

It just goes to show how dangerous out of date plug-ins can be. I wish the WordPress plug-in list would just give the version number of each plug-in, but what date that version came out. It would be a great way to root out old plug-ins.

Thank you for all your help and I look forward to watching Jetpack develop :)
