Install Wildcard SSL

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a WordPress website that is hosted by WordPress. I have purchased a Wildcard SSL from GoDaddy which provides some other services.

I need to install the Wildcard SSL onto WordPress, but I don’t know how. Where would I upload the zip file I have?

I have a subdomain (and plans to add more) that is not secure. I am using the Wildcard SSL to secure my main domain as well as all my current and future subdomains.

Pls LMK where to upload this Zip file as well as next steps… Thx

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @maile614c3299e1, actually we automatically take care of the SSL for all subdomains you host here — no need to buy one since we handle it for you. You would just need a plan for each separate site with a custom subdomain.

Or, if you meant to use this with a multi-site installation at GoDaddy, they’d be able to help you set up the SSL there.

The subdomain 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com is not showing up as secure. This is why I bought the wildcard SSL.

Wordpress only provides standard SSL, I purchased this Wildcard SSL elsewhere (from GoDaddy) but need to install it here on WordPress since WordPress hosts my site. How do I do that?

The main domain – marylandhousepartners.com – is hosted by WordPress.

The landing page was created on groove funnels, and is now a subdomain. I set it up as subdomain through GoDaddy.

I purchased a Wildcard SSL from GoDaddy so that the main domain and all the subdomains under it could be secure.

I was told I need to upload the zipfile for the SSL certificate into my WordPress panel, but I don’t see how. WordPress is hosting the site, so I think I need to do it there.. How do I do that?

  • Hi there,

This is only for self-hosted WordPress.org sites as you do not have access to cPanel on WordPress.com-hosted sites.

As @supernovia referenced, we install all SSL certificates on WordPress.com hosted sites:

    https://wordpress.com/support/https-ssl/#how-do-i-install-an-ssl-certificate-on-my-wordpress-com-site

Your subdomain may be showing up as not secure because you have not pointed the nameservers over to WordPress.com or mapped the subdomain to WordPress.com yet.

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-subdomain/

We add the SSL certificate once the domain has been mapped:

    https://wordpress.com/support/https-ssl/#why-is-my-site-missing-an-ssl-certificate

Once you point the nameseervers over to WordPress.com and map your subdomain, your SSL certificate should be good to go within 72 hours.

    Hope that helps

I will try that. Thank you for clarifying. BRB to let you know if it works. Thanks

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I already have a CNAME entry for the page 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com . The page is accessible online, it just has aa security error.

The page was created & hosted in Groovepages and I created this CNAME to change the address/host from groovepages to my current host (WordPress.com). (Don’t know if my language is quite right, but I think that’s what the cname did – change host).

Here’s a screenshot. So that page comes up, it’s just not secure. Here’s a link to a screenshot, since I can’t seem to upload images here. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dqcZQKVIACGUjAQmYrPKgGnVc4hctYbS/view?usp=sharing

Also, is the domain already mapped as well as the subdomain? Here’s a screenshot of my panel.

It seems like I did all these steps but 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com is not showing up as secure after 72 hours.

Here’s another screenshot of setup. I didn’t change nameservers, should I try that? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XAsaW0FgMMV_boCmeTHJvzmHJWDErGBE/view?usp=sharing

  • Hi there,

To clarify, you are NOT hosting 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com on WordPress.com but instead hosting that site on another service? Grovefunnels?

I am referring to the site in my screenshot here:

To clarify, we provide SSL for all sites hosted on WordPress.com, which is why have a secure https address on https://marylandhousepartners.com/, but we are not able to provide SSL for sites hosted with other providers. For our SSL to work, 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com itself would also need to be hosted on WordPress.com

This is not something that can be overcome with settings such as the ones shown in your screenshots I’m afraid. To get a secure https address for 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com you would need to contact Groovefunnels for assistance. As the host of 7ways.marylandhousepartners.com they would be able to provide SSL from their side.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I’ve been talking to all of you for weeks now, and yet no one can explain deeper than “I’m not hosting, go talk to someone else.”

So now I had to go to Youtube and learn what CNAMES are myself, and talk to a web developer. I’m so disappointed in the customer help. WordPress, GoDaddy & Groovefunnels ALL seem more interested in being done with this, rather than helping the customer.

The setup is more complex than it looks. I would appreciate if WordPress Help could look at this more carefully. Then I might finally get a solution.

As I understand it, a CNAME sets up an alias, so perhaps Groovepages is hosting (though they say they aren’t). This screenshot for automated setup seems to confirm they aren’t though. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t4CA_OPuey6ndgsQYGoMpaiG-DwOKy3S/view?usp=sharing

For someone else to host, the code just lives somewhere else – doesn’t seem that hard for WordPress.com to now have it on their servers. It really seems like WordPress.com is hosting, since the main website was created in WordPress- http://www.marylandhousepartners.wordpress.com. So all the subdomains should fall under that main domain.

The original domain was registered before the WordPress site was created – http://www.marylandhousepartner.come was created by GoDaddy, but the content for the site is on WordPress at http://www.marylandhousepartners.wordpress.com .

Does any of this information help to shed further light on where the site is hosted?

  • Hello there,

Sorry to hear you’ve been pushed from pillar to post there – please do appreciate that we are not able to help with third party services.

That said, I’ll do my best.

Ok, so we are hosting the site: marylandhousepartners.wordpress.com. The domain https://marylandhousepartners.com/ is being mapped to WordPress.com via A Records.

Because A records are used for the mapping (and not name servers) the DNS of the domain would be done at the domain registrar (GoDaddy).

This means, if you’re needing to add a Cname for Groove pages, then this would be done at GoDaddy.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks, I upgraded so I can talk with someone in chat about this (vs support forum & emails). Sorting it out there. Appreciate your help.
