Installing a plugin (online instructions having failed)

    I’m trying to install a plugin, and the instructions I found told me to go to the ‘plugins’ tab, which is apparently directly below the ‘Appearance’ tab on the dashboard, but it isn’t. How do I install my plugin without this tab/how do I find this tab?

    Many thanks in advance for any help.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    WordPress.COM blogs do not have a plugins tab, and you cannot install plugins on them;

    If you try to tell us what you want to accomplish, perhaps we can find a workaround for you. And please don’t say “install a plugin.” Presumably you want the plugin to DO something: what is that thing?

    Ahh I get you, didn’t realise there was such a difference. A lot of other things make sense now.

    I’m wanting to put a microblogging widget on my blog, like a twitter feed but not twitter, that I can run from my blog. Out of interest, how easy would it be at a later point to transfer a .com blog to .org?

    If it’s too much hassle don’t bother, I’m just experimenting a bit and I’m looking at setting up a proper website so it seems .org might seem the better choice anyway.

    It’s not difficult at all. The instructions are in the Support documents.

    If you want a microblogging widget that is not twitter, why not just open another free blog using P2 as your theme and put the RSS widget in the sidebar, with the feed of that blog?

    Giving that a shot now and it’s working pretty well. Thanks a lot!

    YOu’re welcome. I know every two-bit social media consultant is telling people they need to host independently, but at bottom that’s largely because social media consultants make more money off independent blogs than WP.com ones. I have both kinds, and I don’t advise people to make the move unless they want to run a lot of javascript and/or paid advertising.

    So let me get this right.
    I cannot use plug ins in WordPress ?? – OK?

    @lancerlabels: You cannot use plugins in blogs hosted at WordPress.COM, but you can in self-hosted WordPress.ORG blogs. Here’s more on the difference between the two:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
