Installing Classic Editor vs New GutenbergEditor
-
Hi,
A couple of questions re the above:
1. Will installing Classic Editor interfere with the smooth operation of our website? Can we not just preserve the current platform as it is without Classic install?2. When will the new Gutenberg format be released and will we be alerted ahead of time?
Many thanks,
SB

Hi there, what website are you referring to? Please give us the site address so we can give you an accurate reply.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I thought the new Gutenberg format was to be universally applied to all WordPress websites?

Hello again, eventually Gutenberg will be rolled out to WordPressdotcom as well. You might be interested in reading this earlier forum discussion on that topic: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/information-on-gutenberg-implementation/

Thanks very much for this – some very interesting points raised in the forum.
Thanks again,

You’re welcome. If your site is hosted here on WordPressdotcom you might see the option to enable the Gutenberg editor in tbe WP Admin dashboard. That is an opt-in choice. Cheers.

You’re right justjennifer, the dashboard gives an option to click new Gutenberg and an option to stay with Classic Editor.
I’d ‘install’ Classic but I’m unsure whether that would preserve my current site in its entirety as it is i.e. without adding new plug-ins etc. that might disrupt the website editing process. The very fact that we have to ‘install’ rather than ‘choose ‘ Classic raises my doubts
This is the message under the Classic option:
“The new editor will be enabled by default in the next major release of WordPress. If you’re not sure how compatible your current themes and plugins are, we’ve got you covered. Install the Classic Editor plugin to keep using the current editor until you’re ready to make the switch.”
The implication is that one has to install Classic or the platform will automatically migrate to new Gutenberg. This is contrary to the forum link WP reply which implies that there won’t be any automatic migration.

Hello again, if you want to be 100% sure that you are getting the most accurate information, best let us know the address of your site. :)
Here’s what I see in the WP Admin dashboard on my site here on WordPressdotcom (temp screenshot)

I have the same concern as the poster above.
Will installing the Classic Editor preserve my site as it is?
After having spent a few hours playing around with Gutenberg I feel pretty sure I will be doing just that in due course!stmaryswivenhoe.org

Hi there, wivstmary – your site stmaryswivenhoe.org is hosted here on WordPressdotcom. The replies by Staff in the above forum thread are relevant to you as well. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/information-on-gutenberg-implementation/
You don’t need to install anything on your site. If you have activated the Gutenberg Editor in your WordPressdotcom site’s WP Admin dashboard, you can also deactivate it to return to the Classic Editor. (temp screenshot)
If you have any other questions about working with Gutenberg on your WordPressdotcom site, it would probably be best to open a new forum thread at https://wordpress.com/help/contact Thanks!

Hi, the site is redcarpetmagazine.co.uk
My preferred option is not to pick any option at all – including installation of Classic. Is ‘do nothing’ therefore an option?
Thanks again

Hello again @sbal70,
meta name=”generator” content=”WordPress 4.9.8″
It looks like your above site redcarpetmagazine.co.uk is using the standalone WordPress software, so you’ll want to head over to https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/gutenberg and the Gutenberg FAQ is at https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/handbook/reference/faq/ The support forum at https://wordpress.org/support is your destination for general support questions for your site.
@wivstmary You’re welcome. Again, if you have more questions about using Gutenberg here on WordPressdotcom, best to open a new forum thread.Cheers all!

For those of us on WordPress.com, will installing the plugin for the Classic editor be free, or will it require buying into the business plan at $25 a month? I took Gutenberg out for a test drive the other day and was not pleased with what I saw…
-
@johlt It seems extremely unlikely that’s going to be the case. Citing @kokkieh in this thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/information-on-gutenberg-implementation/
The classic editor should also still be available, and it should be possible to edit a Gutenberg post in the classic editor, just like it currently is in Core, and will be via the Classic Editor plugin once Gutenberg becomes the default there.
If you’d like to give some feedback on Gutenberg though, please feel free to do so here: https://wordpressdotorg.polldaddy.com/s/gutenberg-support
Let us know if you have any further questions or issues. :)
