installing Gears to improve page upload speed

I’ve just been reading this support link about improving the speed of uploads by installing Gears by storing information locally on your computer.
http://support.wordpress.com/turbo/I am finding upload very slow and had put it down to my computer being quite old (1.5 GHz Powerbook G4 running Mac OSx 10.4.11). My question is whether installing this software will create other issues for my tired old laptop and how much space might be needed to create the local database and file storage that will make the web tools function better (I only have 4GB of free space currently).
I don’t have a technical understanding of how web information is stored so does this mean that everything I’m currently uploading to my blog and then deleting from my mac to free up space will be added back on to my computer?

I would stay away from Gears right not since I’m not sure if they have gotten it fixed yet. It has been broken for sometime for Firefox/wordpress users.
The space requirements for the Gears cache is fairly small actually, so that would not be an issue.

appreciate the advice, don’t want to cause any new problems for myself. It’s a good exercise in being patient!
