Installing new themes…?
-
Hey All,
So this may be a stupid question, but I’m new to website/bloq building and need some help. I just purchased a theme package from Elegant Themes.com, so I could upgrade my current theme and have more flexibility with customization.
On the Elegant Themes website, they have a tutorial on how to install the themes to WordPress, which shows an “Install Tab” on the Appearance Menu in the WordPress Dashboard.
However, when I went to my Dashboard and the Appearance menu, there is no “Install Tab” option….?Doing some research on the support page, WordPress says they don’t allow uploading/installing custom themes?!!
Sorry, but I’m confused….? I thought we were able to install/use any custom themes for our sites with WordPress?
If not, then why would Elegant Themes.com sell and show a tutorial on their site for installation and use with WordPress.
Sorry, as I said, I’m very new to building websites and looking for clarification. Just a little frustrated about spending money on a new theme, which now I can’t install.
Sent emails to support at WordPress and Elegantthemes, but have not received any response yet.
Appreciate any info or feedback.
Cheers-

I guess Elegant Themes saw you coming – there are two types of WordPress .ORG & .COM – WordPress.ORG installs can use their own Themes .COM can’t as you figured out – my guess is they sell more Themes when they don’t make the distinction or they just figure that “you are a professional and know what you are doing”

You could try asking for a refund but Themes tend to be sold without a refund policy sine the files could just be copied and used anyway – but you could try.

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins or any themes into them The themes found on the internet are for wordpress.ORG installs which run on different software.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/On free hosted wordpress.COM blogs we can only use the themes which have been coded to run on this multi-user software and made available to us here. > Appearance > Themes and no others. We cannot edit either themes or templates on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
In other words you cannot use the theme you purchased on the free hosted WordPress.com blog linked to your username. It’s only for WordPress.org installs. Please read: WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences

Thanks for the info and quick reply. I guess this is what I get for being a beginner and not understanding the difference! Doh!
A friend, who is much more experienced then I am, initially helped me setup the website, but never explained that there was a difference between .COM & .ORG.
If I can’t get a refund, I guess I’ll have to try and learn how to build a new site using .ORG…?
Thanks.

Why can’t you get a refund? I would go to the elegant themes site and request one explaining why I am doing so.

I stand corrected – they have a 30 day refund policy:
http://www.elegantthemes.com/terms.html
See:
4. Refund Policy
We offer refunds to any unsatisfied customer up to 30 days after the purchase was made -
