Installing themes from other sources
-
If my blog is hosted on WordPress, can I install custom themes from 3rd partys, or am I relegated to the free and premium themes shown in Appearance|Themes?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We do not have FTP access so there is no way to upload a theme on wp.com. Even if we had such access, you must realize that themes have been modified to work on this platform. So a theme such as “Responsive” for WordPress.ORG will be different in its wp.COM form.

I figured this was the case. So my only option would be to use my own ISP…preferably one who supports WordPress.
I’m actually OK with the themes here, but they all list all my posts on the home page and before long I would have a home page a mile long. Surely there’s a way to just have post excerpts displayed, with a “Read More” button or something?
Or at worst…have only the most recent post on the home page and let people see the others with Recent Posts, Archives, etc.

You can use the read more tag with any theme.

Some themes support custom excerpts:

There is also the problem of disabling infinite scrolling:

You can specify the number of posts to display per page:
Dashboard —>Settings —> Reading —> “Blog pages show at most___” -
There is also this possibility for displaying post excerpts:

This is the part I am referring to:
“So:
1) You edit each post and set its image as a featured image.
2) You create a page in Pages > Add New, and paste the display-posts shortcode as its content. What you describe requires this version of the shortcode:
[display-posts posts_per_page="-1" image_size="thumbnail" wrapper="div"]” -
Thanks, 1tess! Even an experienced geek is a newbie when out of familiar territory :-) I searched for these things and thought they should be there…but just wasn’t finding them. I’m sure this speaks more of my impatience rather than WordPress hiding the features <lol>.
I’ve been in the computing business (though now retried) since the earliest Commodore days, and I’ve never seen support forums with more helpful, friendly, and fast-responding people! My sincere thanks.

Oh! The first computer I ever used didn’t even have a screen! It took up a whole room (locked) and you made punchcards for a program to run. I remember volunteer teaching in daughter’s elementary school where they had those commodores with the tape recorders. Everything changes and so we are always newbies…
Best wishes.
