how do i install a wordpress theme purchased from another website?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

the upload and install tab is actually missing from the theme dashboard also, please help

Themes aren’t uploaded to blogs hosted on WordPress.com. They can only be uploaded to self-hosted blogs running on WordPress.org software. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here:

Hmmm…thought so. So my friend who had a theme uploaded from Themeforest is using this on the wordpress.com dashboard, with an install tab at the top. Is this right?… Have downloaded the wordpress 4.0 folders, now just need to figure out what to do next

Your friend is probably using Jetpack, a plugin we created. Jetpack lets you connect your self-hosted WordPress site to the tools we offer here on WordPress.com. Read more about it here:
When you’re using WordPress.com instead of self-hosted, there’s no need to upload any updates to the WordPress software. It’s already running for you. :)
