Instant Followers?

After hooking up my twitter account with Publicize, I instantly recived a boom in my WordPress follower count. Why do my twitter followers appear like real followers? Are they getting emails when I post, or is it just that they see the tweet?

Hi there. If you link social media accounts like Twitter, Tumblr and LinkdIn to your blog via Publicize, the followers you have on those accounts are added to your total WordPress follower count. It just means they’ll see the post in their feeds on those platforms. It does not mean they read your blog, and they definitely won’t get emails as people have to sign up specifically to receive those. Also see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/followers/#follower-stats
Personally I don’t pay much attention to my follower count. Pageviews and comments are a much more accurate reflection of the actual number of people who read your blog.
