instead of a picture, there is a ”0“

I just now clicked from Vigilance to Inuit Types. In my first post I put a photo with comment. When I clicked to go back to the homepage to see, there was an ”0“ instead of the photo/picture. When I clicked that 0, the picture appeared, but why did I have to click the 0 to make the picture appear, and will that happen all the time with whoever clicks to my blog?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The “0” in the feature post box means “0” comments on the posts. If you want a featured image then you have to select that in the post itself.

However, as that is a full sized media image you nabbed form Fox News presumably without prior permission. They hold copyright. You do not. I suggest you do not set it as a featured image. I further suggest that you use only images that do you have the permission of the copyright holder to use.

To use an image from PicApp in your blog post, visit PicApp.com, search for an image, and then look for the WordPress.com shortcode. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/picapp/

To locate free images check out my Resources page under “images (free sources)” as there are 70 sources of free images listed there. In each case read the terms of Use and comply with them.

Timethief, you said: ”The “0” in the feature post box means “0” comments on the posts. If you want a featured image then you have to select that in the post itself.“

But that is not the problem. I just now put in a picture image (not a Featured Image) and when I clicked to see the post, the picture was not there but there was that same 0.

When I clicked onto that 0, then the picture appeared, giving the impression that the 0 is somehow connected to the picture.

Wait a second. I was wrong. When I clicked the 0, out came a Comment box with html, so apparently it is connected to the Comment.

However, the question remains: Why did the picture image not show up?

How odd!! I just now went and changed the theme from Inuit Types back to Vigilance, and there is no problem with the picture. The picture shows up.

There is something about the Featured Images that I am misunderstanding.

You edit the post and on the far right hand side column of the posts you will see a row of boxes:
    Publish
    Categories
    Post tags
    Featured Image
Set featured image <- link click it and proceed
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/

    * As you now have changed to the Bueno theme the best choice for a featured image is one you have presized to fit 490 x 200 pixels like Panos points to here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/featured-image-is-always-distorted?replies=2#post-470678

Timethief, I did read the instructions earlier and did understand that I had to click the SET FEATURED IMAGE button. That I do understand. What kept going awry was the proportion of the picture. I see by the bottom half of your reply to me that unlike with the Vigilance theme, I actually have to set the height and width, whereas earlier I never had to bother with it.

This is making me see that Inuit Types or any theme that has these Featured Images can end up taking a bit more time than, say, Vigilance, which takes any old picture and presents it in all the correct proportions.

I am going back there to figure things out, though. Those new themes are so very interesting and pleasing to the eye!! I love them.

What’s important to understand is this. Unless you pre-size your images prior to uploading them the quality will not be preserved. This applies to all images in all themes. However, in the new themes with Featured Images the loss of quality and distortion becomes more visible. So it’s even more important to pre-size the images in advance that you want to upload and use as featured images.

You will find that thesacredpath’s series on images is very informative and includes instructions for preparing images prior to uploading them. The problem with featured images isn’t the quality, it’s the fact that (in contrast to regular images inserted in a post) they are displayed in a box with fixed dimensions.

Timethief and Panaghiotisadam — Thank you for confirming what I was suspecting. :-) I think that to save time and hassle, I will not use Featured Images and just upload pictures and I always did with Vigilance and the other themes I have used in the past.

I am now using Bueno and find it a pleasant, very different change from the excellent Vigilance.
