Integrating blog into photoshelter – total confusion
-
I have signed up to create a photoshelter blog under the impression that I could integrate my blog http://www.anenchantedeye.com into it.
After unsuccessfully trying to do so I read the small print which says:
“You must be using a WordPress.org blog in order for this to work. We cannot pull in content from a WordPress.com blog at this time. This is because WordPress.com does not allow for plugins”
Likewise I’ve seen on the support page of wordpress this response to others trying to integrate their blog:
There is no FTP access and no plugin capability on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes anything at all stated here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ FTP access, and plugins are available only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.
Please read > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database. Learn about the differences here. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
So, it looks like I have to change my blog to a .org site in order to make this happen. My queries are:
a. Does this mean that I lose everything that I’ve put into this site – theme (traveler theme bought through wordpress), widgets etc?
b. I’m confused at how the famous photographer Steve McCurry is able to have a wordpress.com website integrated into his site if this isn’t possible?
His blog address is: http://stevemccurry.wordpress.com/
and he has it merged into this website:
http://stevemccurry.com/Am I missing something because he doesn’t appear to have a .org blog and yet he has it incorporated into another site. How is that so?
Thanks for any advice on this. I really want to include the blog in my website so this is a huge stumbling block for me…

Yes, you lose the theme. There may be a version available for .org, but you’d have to purchase and install that separately. Most widgets here have equivalents in .org. You can just export the actual blog contents.

We have no idea and are not able to assist with support for photoshelter issues. You could ask him. Maybe he just links to it. Maybe he uses an RSS feed to pull in the contents. But that’s not a WordPress.com issue.

Thanks Raincoaster. I’m a bit nervous about switching to .org but it is very frustrating not to be able to integrate my blog. Steve McCurry doesn’t have a photoshelter website but the impression I get is that wordpress won’t let you move a dotcom site to any other platform. I think I’ve worked out how he gets round it – he must be a VIP member. As that service starts at $15k per year I think I’ll have to forego VIP status for the time-being!

This is not true. There are lots of people who are pulling their WP.com sites in to other sites, or linking to them in tabs, etc. There’s no rule against it. It’s just that you’re on your own to do it.

Oh well, maybe that is just the excuse that photoshelter is giving but they won’t let me do it. Back to the drawing board! If anyone knows of any photography sites that do let you integrate a wordpress.com blog I’d be keen to hear!
Thanks for the feedback.
