I’m in charge to update the new design of the website of my agency. It’s an old wordpress not updated for last few years with some useless extensions..

The first problem is that the WP is hosted in an AWS EC2 instance. So I don’t have any access to the files like a good old listing through a FTP client. It’s a pain through AWS console and it’s not my job. So I presume I will to integrate the webdesign through the WP Panel directly.

So I first installed a staging extension called WP-Staging, I then did a backup of my site (front and back) and I later will be able, after cloning the live site to work on the staging clone.

My question is do you think I’m doing right and take the good direction ? to be concise, it’s a just a small agency website, with very few visits per month, but I will to integrate the new designn header, footer, background image to the whole pages, mobile version, delete some pages, and create new ones…

Another question will be what would happened when I will update the wp versions, will I loose every things I developed?

Thank you for your kind assistance :)

    Hey there,

My question is do you think I’m doing right and take the good direction ? to be concise, it’s a just a small agency website, with very few visits per month, but I will to integrate the new designn header, footer, background image to the whole pages, mobile version, delete some pages, and create new ones…

Full disclosure: you’ve landed in the community forums for sites hosted by WordPress.com. So we might be biased, but for a small agency site, we’d recommend our services. We’d manage the WordPress installation for you in terms of updates, security, backups, and cache optimization. Even spam filtering. You’ll want to be familiar with the difference between our services and the free software, and we have an in-depth article on that here, or a summary here.

You could choose to set up a site like that with a relatively simple setup on our Premium, which is our best balance between flexibility and simplicity. Since you’re redesigning the site anyway, I’d just export the content from your Dashboard > Tools, import it here, then update the page templates to your liking.

Or you could do a full export and import into a Business Plan and set up your new site, including any outside plugins and themes necessary.

Another question will be what would happened when I will update the wp versions, will I loose every things I developed?

As long as you’re not editing code directly, you should be okay. But feel free to check in with us on the changes you’re making and we can confirm, so long as the site is hosted here. If you’re running your own WordPress instance with another host, you’ll want to use the forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Does that help? If not, send more details and we’ll go from there.
