interactive maps on wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’d like to add an interactive map to my blog using layers from a GIS. Is there a way to do this on wordpress.com?

I suspect the easiest way will be to use google maps, but this is a long way from ideal as it ties me to using background maps from google – not ideal for my purpose.

    Help much appreciated!

I’m not aware of ANY interactive maps that work on WordPress.com. I wish they did.

    Well, that is a disappointment!

I’ve had google working on mine, but not tried with any data overlayed.

If you get it to work dynamically, do come back and post how. A lot of people would be interested.

    What this space…

Although very likely that it will be a google based solution.

    After a little thrashing…

Create a point/polyline/polygon file using a GIS of your choice (I recommend the excellent and free QGIS), or even in google earth.

Save this as a kml file with a google mercator projection.

Have a google account and login to google maps. Hit create map. You can then upload your data, or draw afresh. Save the map…

Click on the link/chain icon. Copy the lower html code and paste into the text version of your wordpress.com post.

    Job done!

Worth saying it didn’t work first time for me, although certainly is now. I’ll post a link to show the finished results when I’ve finished writing it.

OK, so it appears that google’s implementation of kml doesn’t do what I want it to and is very limited on file size. But it is possible, have a look at this page for an embedded example.

I’m going to try again with OS Openspace (UK specific), following instructions here. Just as soon as the webmap builder is back up and running…

Hmm, interesting. I was hoping for something like Community Walk maps, but this is better than we had.
