Intergalactic-Theme: controlling excerpt and "read more"-Button?

  • Unknown's avatar

    The Intergalactic-Theme looks pretty cool. I tested it and stumbled about some issues and I don’t get behind it… how to cut the excerpt manually?

    If I write down some text (and put a galery under it) it shows up on the front page completely. If I manually insert a more-tag via editor it cuts where I want, but appears two times on the front-page: the manual “mehr….”-Button and the automatic “read more”-Button.

    this example seems to be properly formatted – short excerpt and full text after “read more” – but I don’t can figure out how to do it.

    Having the same problem

    I figured it out … partially…

    It depends on the post-type. Post types like “picture”, “video” and so on will be displayed completely on the front page. Inserting a “more”-tag manually will result in a double appearence of “read more”.

    Only the post-type “standard” cuts the excerpt automatically or accepts a manually inserted “more”-tag without double it.

    For a streamlined front-page you’ll have to set all the posts to standard-type – unfortunately that makes the classification in different post-types obsolete and prevents a nice looking presentation of videos together with much text.

    Maybe the theme-creators can adjust that so that a manually inserted “more”-tag always will result in the theme-included “read more”-button.

    Same here, would be great to have some responce on that from devs.
    Post types are not fixing this

  • I started using the theme myself today, and had the same issue with the <!--more--> tag and button.

    This is how I solved it, it’s not really a general solution, and unfortunately it requires the Custom Design upgrade, but here it is:

    I added the following Custom CSS:

    body .more-link {
    	display: none;
    }

    p .more-link, body .format-standard .more-link {
    	display: block;
    }

    What it does is that it removes the default theme <!–more–> buttons for all post formats but standard, and it displays the <!–more–> tags manually inserted in posts.

    I also have a similar problem. I just want to change the text of the automatic ‘read more’ button that appears.

    I use post format ‘image’ so it shows all the text, not just an excerpt.

    hi,
    very keen to use the beautiful Intergalactic for a portfolio website i’m thinking up.
    but i wanted each band of the home page to link to the pages i’ve created for the projects. it seems the homepage must either show posts, or one single page.
    if i write as posts, the Read More button can only expand to that post, and not link to a different page.
    (i hope this is still making sense)
    so, if i can’t have all my pages on my homepage…
    is there any way i can edit the destination of the Read More buttons of each post?
    if so, my homepage can look nice with each post linking to one of the pages – pages that have a URL like blabla/page and not blabla/2014/11/21/post, as posts do. this wouldn’t be great for a portfolio.
    thank you so much!

    hello? anyone there?

  • Hi leandrocp –

    is there any way i can edit the destination of the Read More buttons of each post?

    You can do this manually by creating a link that goes to whereever you like, and then adding the more-link CSS class to the link to make it look like the other Read More buttons.

    For example, something like:

    <a href="http://wordpress.com/my-awesome-page/" class="more-link">Read More</a>

    p.s. If you have a new theme or CSS Customizatoin question it’s better to start a new thread in the future – folks are more likely to spot it that way, rather than tacking a new question on to an older thread. Thanks. :-)

    hi kathrynwp, thanks very much for your reply.
    i’ve tried it and it hasn’t worked as expected.
    if i open the post, then yes, the customised Read More is there.
    but with this theme, on the homepage that shows the beginning of each post, the standard Read More button is still added automatically, this one no different (linking to full post). and the title of my link can be seen at the end of the excerpt as just text.
    do you understand what i mean?

    p.s. funny your tip about the threads. since forever all i ever see in forums is moderators saying “this is already covered in topic X, please repost there, please search for similar topics before starting a new one”, etc… will do, though!

  • Ah, I understand better what you mean. That link on the front page is automatically generated through the theme files, and there isn’t a way to change where it goes to.

    Ha! It’s still always a good idea to search for similar threads to see if you can find the answer, but as staff (Happiness Engineeers) we mainly focus on unanswered questions or those tagged with the word modlook. You might like to check out these tips on getting help in the forums.

    Shame. Thanks anyway.

  • If you need a theme with more flexibility in terms of a front-page button, you might try one that is specifically designed for you to add your own “call to action” button – which can link anywhere – on the homepage, like Goran and Edin.
