Internal Server Error

My website has a recurring issue with an internal server error. It happens every few days, and the entire site is impossible to access (front and back end). I’ve tried to deactivate plugins one by one, nothing seems to have stopped the problem all together. I can manage to get the site back up by deleting the .htaccess file via FTP when the error is happening, but I need to find a permanent solution.
I’m running the latest WordPress, but my host has an older version of php on the server (PHP 5). I’ve told him this is keeping me from using so many plugins that would protect my site and make it faster. He simply answered me that the problem is on my side and that I shouldn’t be using WordPress to begin with as PHP 5 still works fine. Should I just change my hosting or could the issue be somewhere else? As anyone experienced anything like this?
