Internet Explorer – Mozilla Firefox Incompatibility Issues

  • Unknown's avatar

    I did review some of the posts and noticed entries briefly mentioning a variety of browser “conflicts” but found nothing directly addressing an/the IE and Firefox incompatibility issues.

    I am a web developer and have encountered said problems and although it is simple enough to state as the solution “everyone should upgrade their browsers,” but unfortunately it won’t happen that way.

    Is there any reason why the free templates do not have some type of work-around, such as
    attaching two style sheets to the template…one for IE and one for Firefox?

    For example, I’ve used this code with great results…

    <!–[if IE]>
    <link rel=”stylesheet” href=”stylesheet-name-here.css” type=”text/css” />
    </style>
    <![endif]–>

    There are certainly other ways to work around the problem, but at this moment I am feeling queasy about continuing to persuade my clients to shift their blogs to this service due to this incompatibility issue. My own personal blog content disappeared when I tried one of the newer templates when I switched to IE.

    Anyone have any ideas/direction/solutions?

    A lot of them do, even some of the ones located here at wp.com. Nothing stoping developers from doing so. Not all of those themes require having two sets of CSS files either.

    Anyone have any ideas/direction/solutions?

    Have Microsoft buy out Netscape, Opera, and Firefox? :)

    Honest answer though who be to take this directly to the deveolopers themselves. Here, you’re just preaching to the home viewing audiance.

    That and, since this is open source software, putting out your own fixes may be a help. Else you just look like someone trying to get attention by complaining instead of actually working to solve a possible problem.

    Certainly I am in a position to put my own fixes in…but we’re not allowed to make any adjustments for free. My clientel are typically at the beginning of the Internet learning curve, as well as many other bloggers with similar “limited” knowledge and blogging should be a “plug-and-play” segment of the Internet. Many people have no idea about testing their sites in multiple browsers, let alone using gadgets such as the W3C validation service to ensure it will work across the broadest of platforms.

    I was hoping to bring appropriate attention to this global problem in these forums so that people who do not know CSS, HTML, XHTML, Java script, etc. will not turn away from this service simply because the free template they chose didn’t want to “work” the right way. I also remain equally curious why it isn’t mandatory for WP free templates to be compatible with both of the major browsers.?

    And btw, I whole-heartedly agree that much of this is the responsibility/accountability of the various browsers and have written much about the topic.

    Well, you’re in the wrong forums though. That’s one of the points I was trying to make.

    You’re at a hosting website, not the developer’s site. We don’t make themes here. They do at the other domain though.

    As it being mandatory, I think you need to learn about Open Source software. There’s nothing stopping you from working on fixes. That’s one of the points of using Open Source software, especially since you’re already making a profit from it.

    So, WHICH themes support both browsers? Will the default theme, at least? This is a frustrating problem, and there does need to be at least a limited set of options (or a SINGLE option??) for newbies (both blogging and reading blogs) that will work right out of the box. Fixes and upgrades and plug-ins and doodling are great, and I am already working towards them, but part of being an open community is making at least the beginning levels accessible to ALL… The “get started” tutorial is great, but I don’t remember being warned that leaving the default theme (assuming it DOES support all browsers — does it?) will immediately require one to become a computer programmer..

    One more time. Wrong forums. http://wordpress.org/support/ This is the hosting site, not the development site. You need to be over there.

    All the themes here in wordpress.com (which runs WordPress Multi-User and not normal wordpress) support both browsers. I get the impression that you are self-hosted though and posting in the wrong forums. You need to post over at wordpress.org/support/ as this is the forum for the hosted version of wordpress and we can’t edit, change or manipulate any themes here or even install them. That is only on self-hosted wordpress installations.
