Internet image to post or page to link

How do you place an image from an internet site onto a post or page so that image automatically links to the internet site. For example, an amazon.com book I would like to recommend on my site so the person reading the post/page can simply click on it to go to amazon. I’ve tried copy & paste to the post/page and it does not seem to work. My site (kowalkerjourney.wordpress.com) has a few images on the sidebar that does this through the text widget, but I can’t seem to do this on a post. Please help…

First, you don’t hotlink from their site; that is, you don’t just take the URL of their image and put it in your blog using the Image icon. That forces their servers to host it and every time someone on your blog sees it, it costs them a little bit.
The solution, which I do, is to download the image. Save it to a file on your computer. So, on my machine I right-click on the image, select “Save Image As” give it a title, and save. That puts it on your computer.
Then you go to Write a new post. Above the write box is “Upload media” and you click on the first icon, so then you can upload the image to your own webspace. We’ve got three gigabytes of webspace, so that’s a huge amount. Upload it there following the instructions and once it’s uploaded you can see it’s got a place for URL. Paste the URL of your source page, the original page, in there instead of the URL of the WP.com file.
Send to Editor. That puts it in your blog, a perfect copy of the original, but hosted by your WP.com account.
You can also upload it and put it in a post and then, once it’s exactly where you want it, go back to the page you got it from, copy the URL of the page, in the browser bar at the top, then go back to your post, click on the image, then click on the LINK icon. Put the URL in the link spot.

It’s a lot of typing, but not that complicated. Save to computer, upload to WP.com, add link.
