I just reread because I had the same problem. As it turns out, you need to have a custom domain for it – it won’t let you advertise on regular wordpress.com domains (mine is daughterofcancer.wordpress.com). I have daughterofcancer.com registered in my name, but it will cost me $12 per year for WordPress to place advertising on it. Ugh. I probably wouldn’t make that per year anyway…

@israelitexan1- Hate to be the one to break it to you, but WordPress.com already places advertising on your site. See Point 9 in the Terms of Service and the note at the bottom of this Support doc: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
