Inuit Types: Comment Tweaks Question
-
Hello All,
I’ve been playing around in firebug, and you can see i’ve made a few tiny tweaks to the Inuit Types:Blue layout… which i’m very happy with.
I’ve turned my attention to the comments, and now have something i’m happy with bar two remaining little niggles:
1) I can’t seem to change the properties for when I make a comment… i.e. I reply to the post (or someone inline)
2) I haven’t figure out how to get a container around the pingbacks/trackbacks so i can make them appear more ‘seperate’ when there are no posts (if you’ve used the theme you’ll understand how it just dumps the trackbacks onto a plain background..)If anybody could give me some help on this it would be greatly appreciated, and feel free to firebug away on the site, i’m just a little stumped :S
Cheers all..
Russ
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Unfortunately there’s no way to separate author’s comemnts from reader’s comments because both share the same class:
.authorcommentFor the trackbacks, try something like this
.trackbacklist { background: #efefef; border: solid 1px #ddd; padding: 15px !important; }You’d need to play with the selector’s definition till you get something you like.

Thats a huge step forward, thank you for that…
I was wondering about the .authorcomment thing, and whether I can add any conditions, but seems I’d have to be self-hosted so I can get at the templates to do so :( – maybe i’ll punt it to BizzArtic and see if he won’t include it in an update down the line…
A little unfortunate, but not the end of the world. If the blog starts getting any decent traffic then I might consider it ;)
Thanks again, very useful

You can seperate the author and reader comments if you link your username to your blog so it becomes clickable. You can do this from Users > Personal Settings from your dashboard sidebar. Where it says Account Details enter the link to your blog. You can then target your own comments with a clever CSS3 attribute selector:
p.authorcomment a[href^="http://discomcdisco.com"] {color:#fff; background-color:#f00;}lh
-
Would that just affect the Meta Box?
It’s a massive improvement though, thanks for the tip..
inuit types appears to use “.comment text-right” to amend the comment box, but for some reason I can never get that to apply… i guess now, with you amend above, i could do something like:
p.authorcomment a[href^=”http://discomcdisco.com”] .text-right {
stuffs: values
}I’m quite new to this, so i may not be getting that right…

The problem with attribute selectors is that not all browsers support it, namely IE6 and IE7. If you don’t care about that, that’s a good approach.
Also, writing the selector like this:
p.authorcomment ...it’s just an overkill. This should suffice:
.authorcomment a[href^="http://discomcdisco.com"] {color:#fff; background:#f000;} -
Yeah,
I’ve given that a go (took the p. off as i’m already altering .authorcomment somewhere else…) but for some reason (perhaps cos i’m logged in/on my own blog??) My name isn’t clickable though configured… hence why the selector might not be clicking in…
Gona do some chrome checking of the front-end, so what happens.. any ideas though?

Sorry:

And I mean my name isn’t clickable, so there’s no link attached, and nothing for the selector to find..

Okay, under users (left column) click on Personal Settings. Scroll down and in the Account Details section, enter your website’s URL:
Save, and your name should be linked.

Ah wait… discomcdisco not DiscoMcDisco…
That’s why it works here and not there… two ticks… gona add another comment somewhere else and check…

Have you also set a primary blog? See this for more info

Yeah, discomcdisco.wordpress.com [discomcdisco.com] is set..

Looks like posting from the front-end adds the link, not too sure what happened with that comment.
Either way, the selector doesn’t appear to be picking it up…

It works fine for me testing with Firebug on your test posts, you’ll only be able to change the anchor link itself, not the whole comment box, but it still might be enough to differentiate between your posts and others. I wouldn’t worry too much about older IE users, it is a style change which won’t cause problems for older browsers.

I took a closer look at your source code, and even if you get the link working, that wouldn’t help setting the background color of your comments because:
a) “.authorcomment” is a sibling element of “.text-right” which is the container of the text.
b) for YOUR comments to have a different background, the container element would need to have a distinct class, somehting like “.commentbyauthor” but as it is, both readers’ and your comments share the same classes:
“comment” and “wrap”
Using the attribute selector would only affect the area of your gravatar, but that would be it.
I made a mistake in my first post; I told you that “.authorcomment” was shared by both readers and authors (in this case you), which they; however, the selector envelops a diffrent element in the markup and wouldn’t have made any difference even if you had the attribute selctor added to you CSS (unless, of course, having your gravatar’s container bg would have been enough for you)

Hallluke: Thanks for this, i’ll have more of a play see if i can get a nice effect to cover…
devblog: … not being able to set the comment box and content is the downer for sure. I was only gona make subtle changes to it as well, as i like the theme so much…
Thanks for looking through this though. I Consider the issue covered from both of your help. Hopefully this is a handy resource for people trying to play with the same thing :D
This is my first Forum experience here, so thanks for making me feel welcome, not daft ;)
