Invalid API Key

My API key for running Akismet on my blog is not working. I have this error message in my Akismet Configuration page: “Your key appears invalid. Double-check it.” I went to my wordpress.com dashboard and checked my API key there and pasted it in… but it was the same key. When I click “Update API Key” nothing changes. It seems like this has started when I activated the new stats functionality with my API key… it could have just been a coincidence.

Any thoughts? Help? It REALLY sucks having to moderate all the spam comments I am getting!

    Thanks

No offense but it also sucks when folks don’t use the search bar when they have an error. :(

Search for “Your key appears invalid. Double-check it”

Solution: Get with your host as either they’ve removed the ability to have PHP call an outside URL or they’ve closed off port 80 for outbound connections.

    Hope this helps,

    Wow, sorry.

My host allows outside calls. The other threads didn’t help me out because I have done everything they suggest. Also it seemed like it might be connected to me activating the new stats plugin which wasn’t talked about in the other threads.

    Not a problem. :)

Actually the stats plugin just was released yesterday.

You may have to also white list the akismet servers. *.akismet.com or rest.akismet.com if you need to do a specific one.

I’m thinking that if you have SSH access, testing the connection with a wget would work but I can’t remember if wget uses port 80. I think it does.

Sorry, but I have been learning PHP as I go and have never been a programmer. I am pretty good at figuring things out, but I don’t know how to whitelist a server as I have never done it before. Any help would be appreciated.

Not a problem. Whitelisting is done on the server side though with the firewall. It’s not a PHP option.

You may want to drop staff a feedback and just let them know that you’re having issues and that your host is saying that things are open. They may be seeing something on their end. i would include your API key just to be sure they’re on the same page.

Is this for the blog you have in your username here? I note it’s on a GoDaddy box. Gotta admit that their tech support isn’t known for (how should I put this) playing with a full deck if you catch my meaning and you may want to follow up with them on the issue.

Heh, yeah, I know what you mean. The guy <i>seemed</i> to know what he was talking about and he talked with a few others as well… not that that necessarily means anything, but at least they make it look like they knew what they were talking about. ;)

I sent an email to Akismet… not sure if that is what did it, but the key is appearing as valid and functional now… strange. I’m just glad it is over! I was getting one about every 3 minutes or so.

That’s good. The important thing is it’s working now. :)
