Invalid e-mail address in a comment – how do I reply to the guy?
-
Someone has replied on one of my posts asking for help and I would like to try to help him but the e-mail address he has supplied is invalid. How can someone create a WordPress account without a valid e-mail address? For more details see the post here http://unstmorag.wordpress.com/2013/01/13/a-family-tree-and-more/#comments
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Staff will not breach anyone’s privacy and provide an email address. We cannot help you with this issue – sorry.

Hi, I think you may be misunderstanding my intent, I do not wish you to breach privacy and supply anything. Perhaps I can be clearer with my questions. Here they are exactly (anything not explicitly stated in the question should not be inferred):-
Q1) Is it possible to post comments on Word Press without a valid e-mail address. Yes/No
Q2) If Q1=Yes, Does such a user still receive notifications when replies are posted to their comments. Yes/No
Q3) If Q1=No, Can I assume that this user (who displays an invalid e-mail address) is getting notifications of my replies to his comment? Yes/NoAs you can see I am just looking for Yes/No answers. Essentially, should I bother to continue to reply to his comment or is it pointless on my behalf because he will never know about it.
Hope that makes my query clearer – not asking for his e-mail (actually it never occurred to me that there could be any other e-mail address than the one I could see which was invalid).

Yes depending on the discussion settings

No if it’s not valid then how can any email sent to it be received?Q3) If Q1=No, Can I assume that this user (who displays an invalid e-mail address) is getting notifications of my replies to his comment? Yes/No
No. -
Thanks
No if it’s not valid then how can any email sent to it be received?
I guess I hoped that there was some other notification mechanism that I didn’t know about since I did supply a valid e-mail address when I registered, like a twitter id or some such. Just seems a bit pointless asking for help and giving no way to provide requested help. Ah well, maybe he’ll come back and look at the post again some time in the future.

I know – I guess I was hoping the notifications might go there somehow (not a twitter user so no idea if that even makes sense), but from what you say, it would seem not.

I don’t think the “valid email address” is a full check of the address – just the format and MAYBE that the url is valid but I doubt it – – to do a full validation an email would need to be sent to the address to see if it is bounced back – and since bounce-backs can take several hours in some cases the amount of extra email and checking would be a mess
