  Hi,

  I am new to blogging. Twice today I have found that someone has inserted “smiley faces” into my posts. This concerns me as it is an invasion of my privacy. I assume they like the topic of the blog, but still this is kind of scary. What is happening in this instance.

  Is this the blog you are talking about: http://requiemforarepublic.wordpress.com/ ?

  The other thing is, that there are certain key combinations that will produce smiley faces as shown in this FAQ: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/06/04/what-smilies-can-i-use/ . It could be that you inadvertently used some of those key combinations (not as part of a word) and that is why they showed up.

  You can turn them off by going to settings > writing and deselecting “Convert emoticons like :-) and :-P to graphics on display” and then clicking “save changes” at the bottom of the page.

  To be on the safe side in case someone did guess your username and password, go to users > your profile and change your password and make it a strong one using letters, numbers and even some symbols as suggested on that page. Again, make sure and click “update profile”. You will get a confirmation email sent to the email address you used to set up the blog.
