invisible tags?
-
Just a quick question; I´ve tagged some posts with a few different tags, but only six or seven different tags show up in the right column on my site (the tag cloud). Why is that? I want ALL of my tags to show up. How do I make this happen?
-
The tag cloud widget takes a little time to update (sidebar info is cached separately from blog content). I just had a bunch of tags suddenly appear in the cloud about 30 minutes after i assigned them to posts.
There does seem to be a limit on the number of tags visible in the cloud, but it’s nothing near 7

I’m also having trouble with this. I switched 90% of my categories to tags, and the first six tags I assigned are showing in the cloud, but nothing else. It’s been a couple hours, and still no change. (Using Cutline.)
I guess I’ll just keep checking in.

This seems to have resolved itself for me. Now if only the tags would go somewhere other than a 404 page. . .

This is OT:
I do not know why you switched 90% of your categories over to tags. And I hope you do not think I’m meddling but there’s a lot of confusion so please bear with me while I re-cap for the benefit of others reading this.(1) Tags are meant to be an enhancement to categories.
(2) Tags are intended to allow the blogger to micro-manage their categories.
(3) Tags are not meant to replace categories.
(4) Tags are meant to be used in addition to categories. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/09/21/the-difference-between-tags-and-categories/ -
[still OT]
No, tags aren’t intended to replace categories, but since their implementation on wordpress.com is virtually identical, some people will choose to use only one of them. That’s their choice.
If someone has just spent their weekend tagging all their archives and junking their categories, they shouldn’t have to worry that they’ve made a mistake and need to go back and start all over again. They don’t. Some people will use tags the same way others use categories, just as previously we were encouraged to think of our categories as tags. Some of the other blogging tools I’ve used rely purely on tags and don’t bother with categories at all. It’s your blog, your content, and it’s entirely up to you whether you organise it according to tag, category, both or neither.
-
But please tell us, which is it that Technorati will pick up on? Or do we need to do a whole OTHER kind of tagging for that?
-
@raincoaster: in my experience, categories were always picked up by Technorati. It seems the same happens with the new tags:
Is there any advantage to using tags or categories or both?
Not here at WordPress.com and not for any search engines, no.I’ve just checked it in Technorati. A search there finds both WP’s categories and tags.
-
Both tags and categories use ‘rel=”tag”‘, which according to engtech is what Technorati looks for, so as far as they’re concerned it doesn’t matter which you use. I think the FAQ could be clearer on this point, though.

I understand tags and categories and the difference…but how do I hide the tags on my blog? I want to keep using them, but I don’t want everyone to view them, like on blogger… Any tips?
-
spiritualcourage: As far as I know, there’s no way to do that. There are a couple themes (Iceburgg at least) that don’t show tags on posts.
