invitation w/o wordpress account

  I’d like to invite friends to view private site. The “invitation” seems to require the signing of a wordpress account, as well as assigning certain privilege to my site. Ideally I’d like to have a single password for my site, but it seems that only pages can be password protected.
  Below is what I’d like to achieve:
  – The site is read-only to any viewer
  – The site is by invitation only, but not require a wordpress account
  – The site is password-protected

  Can you please help me with this?

  I’m sorry, John, but your users will have to create a WordPress blog and be invited if you’d like them to view a private blog. The lowest setting for user roles is Contributor, which will also let them create a post, though it can’t be published without admin approval. Both posts and pages can be password protected, so that may be the best route for you.
