I get an email failed to send message when i try to invite followers
Do the invittees have to have a wordpress id or is there something else i need to do?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Someone just needs to have a valid email address.
We have a limit on the number of people you can invite at once, and we also have a limit on the number of total invitations you can have open at any time, but it doesn’t look like you have any pending invitations at the moment for http://plumsofnorm.wordpress.com/
It’s also possible the owner of the email address you’re trying to invite has blocked subscription emails from us. In that case you won’t be able to send them an invitation.
Can you tell us the email you’re trying to invite? If it’s more than one, please type each email on its own line.

I don’t see any history of activity for that email address here.
What is the URL of the site you’re inviting them to?
-
you probably see no activity for the email address because the invitation to it failed to send?
the invite is to my website https://plumsofnorm.wordpress.com/home/
Is there a way to wend you an image? -
@normdeplumet sure, you can upload one at https://wordpress.com/media and then update us here.
I see now that about 22 hours ago they were sent an invitation confirmation — were you able to get it to go through?
-
there was no confirmation all i get is a failed to send message (uploaded)
and there is nothing in the invites to show it was sent -
Hm, I see the problem.
That email address does not belong to a WordPress.com account, so you cannot invite them to the site as a WordPress.com user.
-
I am confused
I asked whether this was necessary and on Oct 1 was told it wasn’t
If this is true; the message should say so!
whilst I understand the need for wordpress users (editors, contributors) I don’t understand why this would apply to followers.
Similarly the subscribe widget seems to accept the subscription and do nothing?
And the send email as well?
Surely if these widgets should have appropriate behaviour for the requestors status -
The subscribe widget won’t work for this particular person because they have a number of pending subscriptions that were never activated via the confirmation email.
They can delete or confirm those manually via https://subscribe.wordpress.com/ but to prevent abuse, we stop sending confirmation emails when an account has reached a certain number of unconfirmed subscriptions.
-
this particular person doesn’t have a wordpress account so where are these pending subscriptions? where is this confirmation email?
As there is an inconsistenct in the answers. Could you confirm whether people with no wordpress account can follow the blog or not?
-
Hi there,
They need to enter their email address on the page:
Then, we’ll send them an email containing a link to their subscriptions. From there, they’ll be able to confirm or reject any pending subscriptions. After they do that you’ll be able to use the subscribe widget on your site.
-
Does this have to be done for everyone who doesn’t have a wordpress account?
That is I can’t email them the invitation because they have to subscribe to wordpress first.
And if that is so why not include this subscription in the wordpress subscribe to post widget?I just wanted to use the email invite for followers. It seems so convoluted!
-
I just tried this subscription invite for a test email:
1. the invitation does not send (the that started this request)
2. I went to the page advised and requested my subscriptions.
3. I received the link to manage my subscriptions and opened it
4. There are no pending subscriptions! It seems obvious that the intention of me sending out invitations to follow is that emails without a wordpress account receive an email that lets them subscribe. From then on they will be able to manage this subscription without having a wordpress account.
The invite to follow function is failing to send the email, that initiates this process, and not setting a pending subscription for the email address.
Can this be fixed please? -

mail.com
further testing worked for gmail.com and me.com
it would seem the issue is linked to email domains?
and I just happened to pick some you don’t cater for properly -
It is possible that some email providers may send the invite to spam. If it’s not in your inbox, I recommend checking there.
-
You don’t weem to understand the problem
Some invite follower emails are not being sent
Wordpress is popping up the message that it failed to send the email
The email is not going to these domains; if it was there would be no failure within WordPressIs it possible to get someone who understands how WordPress generates these emails look at why the pop-up is generated in these circumstances?
-
Can you please let us know what those email addresses are so we can have a look?
Please note that the email addresses will be redacted and be only visible to me and other staff members.

I did another test and was able to send subscription invite that failed when logged into another network. This was ***.live.com
I also had failure on ***mail.com
This would explain why the failed invitation that I originally reported was able to subscribe from their end. (unfortunately she then became embroiled in her sites blocking policies to confuse matters).
The difference being that I am on a satellite connection which has high latency.
I would suggest that your subscription function is not correctly catering for latency and some email domains are not responding quickly enough. Also even those that do might not when there is more traffic?
I am not sure why you can’t just send the email and record a status (sent/invited)?
Recording the status would make administration possible, especially when bulk invitations are sent and your failure message doesn’t indicate which email failed.
Anyway, I have experienced issues with other sites due to latency and they have fixed it.
