invited user as viewer but they see my dashboard?!?
-
Hi. I wanted to test what people see when I invite them to view my private blog. So I used a test email account that I’ve created to send an invite to myself. When I clicked on “accept invitation” in the invite email, I was taken to my admin dashboard, even though I invited them to be a “viewer”. What is going on?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. Unless you logged out of your own account, created a new WordPress.com account for the test email, and accepted the invitation as that account, what you did won’t work. The reason you got taken to your dashboard when you clicked that link is because you were still logged in as you when you clicked it.
Any person you invite as a viewer will need to create their own WordPress.com username account, and will need to be logged in as that account when accepting the invitation. Viewers won’t have access to your dashboard, and you’ll also not see them in the Users section of the dashboard, but under Settings ->Reading.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Okay..thanks…I just tried it and it worked…although I have to admit, once new users go to the home page…it’s not clear for them what to do as there is only a “sign in” button….no message pops up saying “in order for you to view this blog, you need to create an account”

I also could not see the users under Settings/Reading…only when I invite new users, can I see a list of users I have invited in the past…some of which show they have accepted, but they are not listed on the dashboard page that shows who is following…the logic of the whole site and structure seems strange….

I don’t know why that information is not included, but you can edit the invitation email on the Users ->Invite New screen, so I suggest you include the information for them there.

Under Users in the dashboard, you can only see people to whom you’ve given dashboard access, i.e. Contributors, Authors, Editors and Admins. As followers and viewers don’t have dashboard access, they’re not listed there.
Make sure that if you try to view existing users, you use the WP-Admin dashboard. I don’t think the My Sites page include all the infromation: http://cindyheselton.wordpress.com/wp-admin/users.php
As for viewers and followers being listed in different places, I can only assume they wanted a clear distinction due to the difference between the two. A viewer or follower won’t appear in the reading settings/stats page until they’ve accepted the invitation.
You can see the complete breakdown here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Also note that you can change viewers/invited followers to a different type of user. If you want to give an existing follower or viewer dashboard access, you need to invite them again as a contributor or higher.
